예문 1.
(A), (B), (C) 중 어법에 맞는 표현으로 가장 적절한 것은? (07 수능 22번)

I was five years old when my father introduced me to motor sports. Dad thought (A) it/which was a normal family outing to go to a car racing event. It was his way of spending some quality time with his wife and kids. (B) Few/Little did he know that he was fueling his son with a passion that would last for a lifetime. I still remember the awesome feeling I had on that day in May when my little feet (C) carried/were carried me up the stairs into the grandstands at the car racing stadium.


(A) 가주어 it

·해결포인트=뒤에 오는 진주어 'to go to a car~' 를 대신할 수 있는 가주어 it이 필요하다.

·학습방향=문장의 주어가 술어 부분에 비해 긴 경우에는 주어 자리에 원래 주어를 대신하는 가주어 it를 사용해 문장을 구성하게 된다. 이 경우 가주어가 가리키는 원래 주어, 즉 진주어가 어느 것인지를 찾아 낼 수 있는 연습을 해두어야 하겠다. 진주어 자리에는 주로 to부정사, 동명사, that절이 쓰이게 된다. 그리고 가주어와 함께 자주 출제되는 문제로 가목적어 it의 쓰임도 함께 알아둬야 한다. 즉 불완전 타동사(make, find, think, believe, consider…)가 목적어로 to부정사를 취하는 경우 가목적어 it을 사용하고 진목적어 to부정사는 뒤로 돌려 '주어 + 불완전타동사 + it + 목적격 보어 + to부정사'의 형태를 취하게 된다.

·실전테스트=The presiding judge ordered that a cow be hanged by its neck because he believed (it / that) to be a wizard having the power of evil spirits.

(B) 수량 형용사

·해결 point ='He little knew that ~'에서 부정의 의미를 지닌 부사 little을 강조하기 위해 문장의 앞부분으로 옮긴 형태이다.

·학습방향=few는 가산 명사의 수를 표현하고, little은 불가산 명사의 양을 표현하며, 명사가 생략되면 명사의 역할을 하는데, 수식하는 명사의 종류와 수에 의해 결정을 하지만 단순하게 명시되어 있는 명사의 종류에 따른 일치여부를 묻는 문제가 아니라 문맥 속에서 숨어있는 의미에 따라 그 수나 양을 판단해 적절한 수량 형용사를 결정하는 것이 최근 출제경향이므로 그 용례를 정확히 숙지해야 한다. few와 little은 '거의~없는' 이란 뜻으로 부정의 의미로 쓰이는데 주의해야한다.

·실전 테스트=They maybe a little embarrassed, as their parents may not have talked to them about puberty, so you may need to give them (a little / a few) time to get used to talking about these things.

(C) 수동태

·해결 point=접속사(when) 뒤에 있는 my little feet이 주어이고 carried 또는 were carried가 동사인 형태에서 뒤에 동사(carry)의 목적어인 me가 위치해 있으므로, 능동형인 carried가 답이 된다.

·학습방향= 위 기출문제는 동사(carry)의 능동과 수동의 의미구분에 관한 문제이므로, 문맥상 주어와의 관계가 능동인가 수동인가, 그리고 구조상 목적어의 유무에 따라 문제를 해결한다. 또 수동태가 가능한 동사는 목적어를 취하는 타동사만이 가능하므로, 자동사를 be p.p.형태로 제시하는 경우(be seemed, be consisted of…)가 있는데 이는 잘못된 표현이므로 주의하도록 한다.

·실전 테스트=American inventor Thomas Edison's factories in New Jersey (heavily damaged / were heavily damaged) by fire one night.

다음 글의 밑줄 친 부분 중, 어법상 틀린 것은? (07 수능 23번)

To be a mathematician you don't need an expensive laboratory. The typical equipment of a mathematician ①is a blackboard and chalk. It is better to do mathematics on a blackboard ②than on a piece of paper because chalk is easier to erase, and mathematical research is often filled with mistakes. One more thing you need to do is to join a club ③devotes to mathematics. Not many mathematicians can work alone; they need to talk about what they are doing. ·학습방향=현재분사(~ing)와 과거분사(p.p.)를 결정하는 문제로, 수식받는 명사와 능동, 수동 관계를 따져서 능동이면 현재분사, 수동이면 과거분사를 써야 한다.

·실전테스트=As he was attaching the vacuum's bag he noticed a message that declared, "Assure that bag is not punctured or damages in any way, as this will inhibit the vacuum's effectiveness."
