[똑똑한 학습법] '동사 찾기' 정리를

영어습득 과정에서 초등학교 저학년이 주로 읽기, 듣기, 말하기를 '즐겁게(fun)' 익히는 과정이라면 초등학교 고학년은 읽기와 쓰기에 초점을 맞춰 양(quantity)을 늘려야 한다. 중학교 과정으로 넘어가면 학교 교과과정에서 요구하는 어휘와 문법이 더욱 중요해진다. 이 때 꼭 점검해야 할 문법사항 중 '동사 찾기'를 정리해보자.
첫째 서술동사(Main Verb) 찾기.
단어를 한 문장의 표준이라 가정할 때 짧거나 긴 문장에서 의미단위 형성을 위해 선행되어야 부분이다. 우선 비교적 표준적인 다음의 문장에서 서술동사를 찾아보자.
1. Operation Push founded in 1971 by Jackson provides educational assistance to children living in economically depressed communities.
2. The number of water molecules present in a given hydrate is fixed.
다음은 비교적 긴 문장이 많은 신문사설에서 술어동사를 찾아보자.
3. A little girl standing naked on an emergency staircase landing, while her small body faced the shut door as if begging to be let in, was covered in newspapers a few days ago to make many readers shudder.
둘째 도치된 문장(Inverted Sentence)에서 동사 찾기. 부정어구와 관련된 문법을 고려해 어순을 고려해야 하는 문장들은 다음과 같다.
4. Not only does Tina like the quality but also the quantity.
5. Not until the war broke out did Koreans realize Russia's identity.
다음은 주로 소설에서 묘사할 때 사용하는 어순의 도치이다.
6. All round him the long scar smashed into the jungle was a bath of heat.
