[½ÃÄ«°í ´ÙÀ̾] Calculator - Dependency
/¼±°æ¾Æ ¹Ì±¹ Von Steuben °í±³ ±³»ç
In the beginning of the new school year the students in math classes were asked to bring their calculator to every class session, and I couldn't understand why this was required. The use of a calculator was an accepted way of doing class work by both teachers and students. I was quite taken aback by this bit of shocking reality, as we teach students in Korea not how to operate a calculator but rather how to solve math questions on their own only with pencil and paper. Collecting my thoughts on this calculator-dependent math class, I glanced at all those well-designed colorful calculators placed on the desk of each student. I felt as if they were laughing at me, saying, "Why do you want to do things in a hard way when there's an easier way? Just use us!"
Later I shared with the math teacher my concern for the consequences of such calculator-dependency in the classroom: that students may learn how to operate a calculator but not how to do arithmetic by themselves. He expressed regret over the situation and said it's something inevitable, as the students have been accustomed to using calculators since their elementary school days. He added that the facilitation of hands-on lesson activities designed to help solve math questions would be very helpful, especially for those students with low achievement in math. I also learned that the use of calculators in lower grades has been controversial at times. However, the use of graphing calculators this school provides appears to be a different matter. I think they provide abundant math learning resources.
Though a calculator is a helpful item to have, I believe the school children should learn how to do arithmetic on their own by understanding mathematical applications, which is something a calculator does not demonstrate. At any rate, the calculator-dependency in grade schools does seem to support the idea that the U.S. children are poor in math relative to children in other countries. < ³¡ >
