Willa was tired, so Willa went to bed.

She lay with her pillow this way…

and that way… and another way.

But Willa couldn't sleep.

"I'm afraid that I might have a bad dream,"

■ Pre-Reading (읽기 전)

C:Mom, I read books and listened to music for hours, but I can't get to sleep. I came to sleep with you. I even brought my teddy bear.(엄마, 책을 읽어도, 음악을 들어도 잠이 안 와요. 엄마랑 같이 자려고 왔어요. 이렇게 테디베어도 같이 왔어요.)

M:Come next to me. Now, think about the good things that happened to you today.(엄마 옆에 이리 오렴. 자, 오늘 있었던 일 중에서 기분 좋았던 일들을 생각해 봐.)

C:Well, I had a good time jumping rope with friends today. That was the most fun.(음. 오늘은 친구들과 줄넘기를 하면서 놀았던 것이 제일 재미있었어요.)

M:I think your jump rope is waiting to play with you outside. Listen carefully, I'll tell you a fun story.(밖에 있는 줄넘기가 같이 놀려고 널 기다리는 것 같구나. 잘 들어 봐. 엄마가 재미있는 이야기를 읽어줄게.)


■ Shared Reading (읽으면서)

M:Willa was tired, so she went to bed. She tossed and turned, but couldn't fall asleep. She's telling her brother Willoughby that she's afraid she might have a nightmare.(Willa는 피곤해서 잠을 자려고 했지만 이리저리 뒤척이고 잠을 잘 수 없어. Willoughby 오빠에게 악몽을 꿀까 봐 두렵다고 말하고 있어.)

C:Her brother is telling her to think of something happy. Turn the page, mom.(오빠는 기분 좋은 것에 대해 생각해 보라고 하네요. 뒷장을 넘겨봐요, 엄마)

M:Willa tried to think of something happy, but she couldn't. Willoughby is telling her to look under her bed.(Willa는 잠을 자기 전에는 행복한 무엇인가에 대해 생각하지만 생각이 안 나. Willoughby는 침대 밑을 보라고 하네.)

C:Willa's chicken slippers are under the bed. They're waiting for Willa's feet. That's something really happy, right?(침대 밑에는 닭 모양의 슬리퍼가 있어요. 슬리퍼는 Willa의 발만 기다리지요. 그건 정말 행복한 일이에요. 그렇죠?)

M:Sure. Are there any other happy things? A basketful of toys in the corner of the living room is waiting for Willa. What are they waiting for?(물론이지. 또 행복한 일이 어디 있을까? 거실의 코너에는 Willa를 기다리는 장난감 바구니가 있어. 그들은 무엇을 기다릴까?)

C:They're dreaming about tomorrow and the games Willa will play with them. That's a really happy thing, too.(물론 Willa가 장난감을 가지고 놀 내일을 기다리겠죠. 그것도 정말 행복한 일이에요.)

M:I think Willa is getting sleepy now. Willa's happy about the teddy bear waiting to hug her. That's a really happy thing, too.(Willa는 이제 잠이 오나 봐. Willa는 자기를 껴안아 줄 테디베어를 보고 행복해하지. 이것도 정말 행복한 일이야.)

C:But the happiest thing is to have a good brother like Willoughby. That's the happiest thing ever.(그래도 제일 행복한 것은 이렇게 좋은 오빠 Willoughby가 있는 것이에요. 제일 행복한 일이에요.)



■ Post-Reading (읽은 후)

M:What do you remember best among all the things that Willa and Willoughby saw together before they went to sleep?(잠자리에 들기 전 Willa와 Willoughby가 같이 본 것들 중에 네가 가장 생각나는 것이 뭐니?)

C:Umm. I remember the chicken slippers waiting for Willa, and the drawing of Willa and Willoughby looking out the window while they were waiting for the morning to come.(음. Willa를 기다리는 닭 모양의 슬리퍼도 생각나고요, 같이 다음 아침을 기다리며 창밖을 바라보는 그림도 기억이 나요.)

M:Can you tell me the things waiting for you tomorrow morning?(내일 아침에 너를 기다리는 것들을 말해볼래?)

C:Umm. My earmuffs and skates are waiting for me. I promised to go skating with friends tomorrow. I'm getting sleepy. Good night, mom.(음. 귀마개랑 스케이트가 절 기다리고 있어요. 내일 친구들과 스케이트를 타기로 했거든요. 잠이 오는 것 같아요. 엄마, 안녕히 주무세요.)



■ Reflection (돌아보기)

'우길주 교수의 영어동화' 마지막 연재는 전 세계 어린이들이 좋아하는 동화 작가 Joyce Dunbar의 를 선택했습니다. 그녀의 작품이 호소력을 가지는 것은 스토리를 잘 받치고 있는 따뜻한 그림 때문입니다. 페이지를 넘길 때마다 펼쳐지는 포근한 그림, 특히 사랑스럽고 다정한 남매의 모습이 담긴 잔잔한 그림은 이야기의 아름다움을 더합니다. 우리 아이들의 잠자리가 '풀잎은 자라고, 꽃이 피며, 나뭇잎은 한들거리고, 구름은 둥실 떠가고, 햇빛이 반짝반짝 빛나는.' 이런 상상으로 늘 포근하면 얼마나 좋을까요? 잠든 아이들의 얼굴을 들여다보신 적이 있습니까? 그 얼굴에서 이론과 사상을 넘어서 우리가 지켜야 할 가장 행복한 가치를 만나게 됩니다.

어떻게 하면 영어를 잘할 수 있을까요? 우리는 이 어려운 질문을 너무도 쉽게 합니다. 같은 것을 가르쳐도 아이들은 다 다르게 배웁니다. 가르친 만큼 배우리라는 것은 가르치는 사람의 교만입니다. 아이들의 눈높이로 더 내려가야 합니다. 세상에서 가장 먼 거리는 머리와 가슴까지라고 하지요? 무엇을 가르칠지보다 아이들이 어떻게 배우는지를 먼저 살펴보세요. 영어교육도 결국 '교육'입니다.
