■ Pre-Reading (읽기 전)
C:It's so much fun to play house with you, mom. "Honey, have some tea." "What would you like for dinner today, dear?"(엄마하고 이렇게 '엄마놀이' 하니까 너무 재미있어요. "여보, 여기 차 좀 드세요." "여보, 오늘 저녁은 뭘 드시고 싶으세요?")
M:"I'd like to have steak and broccoli soup for dinner. Can you make it for me?"("저녁 식사로 스테이크와 브로콜리 수프를 먹고 싶어요. 만들어 줄 수 있어요?")
C:"Of course. I'll make whatever you want, all by myself. Wait just a minute."("그럼요, 당신이 먹고 싶어 하는 요리를 직접 만들어 줄게요. 잠시만요.")
M:Playing house is always fun, isn't it? Come here. Today, I'll tell you a story about some children who enjoy role playing.(엄마 놀이는 항상 재미있지? 이리 오렴. 오늘은 재미있는 놀이를 하는 아이들의 이야기를 들려줄게.)
■ Shared Reading (읽으면서)
M:Daddy's going fishing and the two sisters are about to play in the front yard. It's a pretty yard, with lots of trees and beautiful flowers.(아빠는 낚시를 가시고 자매는 앞마당에서 놀려고 하는구나. 나무도 많고 아름다운 꽃도 많은 예쁜 마당이네.)
C:What's this? A big giant has shown up in the yard. Kids, run away! But they're looking at the big fish in the pond and didn't see the giant.(이게 뭐예요? 마당에 아주 큰 거인이 나타났어요. 얘들아, 어서 피해! 그런데 아이들은 연못의 큰 물고기를 보고 있느라 거인을 보지 않았어요.)
M:Watch out! A giant! He is going somewhere, holding the children in his hands. What should they do?(조심해∼거인이야∼. 거인은 아이들을 손에 쥐고 어디론가 가고 있구나. 어쩌면 좋을까?)
C:Lucky for the kids, the giant is resting because he's tired. This is the time, kids. Run away! They're trying to move the stone to escape from underground, but it's too dark.(다행스럽게도 거인은 피곤해서 쉬고 있어요. 이때다, 얘들아. 도망 가! 아이들이 돌을 움직여서 지하에서 탈출하려고 하지만 너무 어두워요.)
M:They finally open the door and escape, but it was a trap door. They swim out through a tunnel, but it leads them to where the giant takes his shower.(문을 열어 도망치지만 그건 함정의 문이었네. 터널을 통해 수영을 해서 나가지만 다시 거인이 샤워를 하는 곳으로 빠져버리네.)
C:While the giant is reading a book, the kids are trying to get in the jar above the fireplace. Hurry up, kids. Get out fast!(거인이 책을 읽는 동안 아이들은 벽난로 위 항아리 속으로 들어가려고 해요. 서둘러, 얘들아. 빨리 빠져나가!)
M:The kids have fallen onto the giant's plate. Oh my, what's going to happen? Now the giant is going to eat them.(아이들이 떨어진 곳은 바로 거인의 접시 위였어. 이런… 어쩜 좋을까? 이제 거인이 잡아먹을 텐데.)
C:Turn the page. Whew, that was lucky. They weren't really caught by a giant; they were just playing Giant.(다음 장을 넘겨봐요. 휴… 다행이에요. 아이들은 진짜 거인에게 잡힌 게 아니라 거인놀이를 하고 있었던 거예요.)
■ Post-Reading (읽은 후)
M:If you were a child in the story, what tricks would you play on the giant to defeat him?(네가 만약에 아이였다면 어떤 속임수로 Giant를 물리칠 수 있을 것 같니?)
C:The very moment the giant tried to eat me with a fork and knife, I'd make him fall through a big hole into the children's house.(Giant가 포크와 나이프를 들고 나를 잡아먹으려고 하는 순간, 큰 구멍으로 아이들 집으로 떨어지게 할 것 같아요.)
M:And then what will happen? I'm getting curious.(그러고 나서 어떤 일이 벌어질까? 궁금해지는걸?)
C:With his body stuck in the house, the giant won't be able to move, so he has to surrender. Then he becomes a gardener in the children's home and becomes their good friend. Isn't that a good idea?(집에 갇혀버린 Giant는 몸을 움직일 수 없어 항복하고 아이들 집의 정원사가 되어 아이들의 친구가 되어주었을 것 같아요. 좋은 생각이죠?)
■ Reflection (돌아보기)
'Watch out! A Giant!'는 전 세계 어린이들이 좋아하는 동화 작가 Eric Carle의 1978년 작품입니다. 그림책의 마술사라고 불리는 그의 작품이 호소력을 가지는 것은, 페이지를 넘길 때마다 펼쳐지는 시각적인 화려함, 치밀한 구성, 그리고 늘 자연을 배움의 공간으로 인정해 우리 아이들에 대한 이해와 존중이 배어있기 때문입니다. 이 책은 특이하게도 만화처럼 등장인물들의 대사로만 이루어져 있습니다. 엄마가 당부하는 말 "Time to come inside." 아이들이 놀면서 주고받는 말 "It's so dark here." 거인의 대사 "I am tired. I need to rest." 등은 간단하지만 일상에서 자주 사용하는 표현들입니다.
극단적으로 표현하면 어린이와 어른들의 차이는 하나 밖에 없습니다. 어른들이 경험을 통해 이해력을 개발하는 반면 아이들의 경우 대부분 제한된다는 것입니다. 경험을 제공하는 가장 좋은 방법은 역시 책입니다. 미국의 영어교육도 도서관 중심입니다. 안타까운 것은 좋은 책들은 비싸다는 것입니다. 도시에도 시골에도 영어도서관이 생겨 이런 책들이 무한정으로 공급될 수 있으면 정말 좋겠습니다. 이것만은 공교육이 욕심을 내도 좋을 듯합니다. 부산교대 영어교육과 교수 kjwoo@bnue.ac.kr
