1. contribute : 동사로서 '기부(기증)하다', '기여(공헌)하다'의 뜻

① I think people who eat fruit peel prefer organic food, which encourages farmers to use less pesticide and thus to contribute to a cleaner environment. (2007 수능 49번) (나는 과일 껍질을 먹는 사람들은 유기농 식품을 선호하고, 이것은 농부들이 농약을 덜 사용하여 결과적으로 보다 깨끗한 환경에 기여하도록 장려한다고 생각한다.)

② They are more likely to contribute to the improvement of the school and the learning of the students. (2004 수능 46번) (그들은 학교와 학생들의 학습 향상에 더 공헌할 가능성이 있다.)

2. distribute : 동사로서 '분배하다', '배포하다' 의 뜻

① In contrast, the percentage of students who major in humanities is similarly distributed between the schools. (2006 4월 경기도 24번) (대조적으로, 인문학을 전공하는 학생들의 비율은 학교 간에 비슷하게 분포되어 있다.)

② Personal information has been collected and distributed without control, causing harm to the right to privacy. (1998 수능 27번) (개인 정보는 통제 없이 수집되고 배포돼 왔고, 사생활에 대한 권리에 해를 끼쳤다.)



# encourage / discourage

1. encourage : 동사로서 '용기를 복돋우다', '격려하다', '장려하다'의 뜻

① In successful groups, individuals are encouraged to produce imaginative and original ideas and share them with others. (2004 수능 25번) (성공적인 그룹들은 그 구성원들이 상상적이고 독창적인 아이디어를 내도록 격려받으며 그것들을 다른 사람들과 공유한다.)

② Instead of focusing on immigrants' disabilities in English, why not encourage them to maintain their abilities in their mother tongues while they learn English? (2006 수능 25번) (이민자들이 영어를 하지 못하는 것에 초점을 맞추는 대신에 그들이 영어를 배우는 동안에 그들의 모국어에 대한 능력을 유지하도록 왜 장려하지 않는가?)

2. discourage : 동사로서 '희망을 잃게하다', '낙담시키다'의 뜻

① But don't be discouraged because there are some things you can try. (2002 수능 28번) (그러나 여러분이 시도해 볼 수 있는 일들은 몇 가지가 있으니 희망을 잃지 마라.)
