[½ÃÄ«°í ´ÙÀ̾] Performance Assessment
À¯°æ¶õ ¹Ì±¹ Von Steuben °í±³ ±³»ç
As a science teacher, you must have sighed at least once or twice when looking at stacks of lab reports or activity worksheets on your table. You would never consider using a card reader. You can easily resolve this by grading the papers one by one based on the standards. Once I begin grading, though it requires time and effort, I get to meet the students individually through their papers while giving points. Also I come to specifically find what type of style they have, how they think about a certain concept and which step of science learning they are at while reading calmly. As time goes by, I cannot remember each individual's facial appearance or other outward features after his or her graduation. However, when someone says his or her name, it sometimes reminds me of the lab paper he or she had once written.
It seems a similar case at Von Steuben where, as a matter of fact, I make far more of an effort. Students' v arious (English) typefaces and sentence expressions frequently slows down the speed of the scoring process. So, I over and over ask teachers or students how to read the letters I could not recognize in order to grade objectively and fairly. Actually I have seen some science teachers' assessment process in this school that the percentage of performance assessment such as lab, projects, worksheets, homework and quizzes is higher than that of written tests. On the other hand, in case of the third grade in the middle school I worked in Korea, the written test occupies a higher rate than the performance assessment method. Meanwhile, when a student does not turn in a specified assignment nor attend a required activity due to absence, he or she cannot get credit. Therefore, students should study constantly and diligently to receive a good mark such as an 'A'. Considering their schedules, which are six or seven classes each day, we can then estimate how much energy the ones who receive an 'A' in many subjects should be spent continually in learning. I have met and communicated with so many students through the sheets again today.
