Deep in the woods there's an old white cabin

with pumpkins in the garden.

There's a good smell of soup,

and at night,

with luck,

you might see a bagpiping Cat through the window,

and a Squirrel with a banjo,

and a small singing Duck.

■ Pre-Reading (읽기 전)

C:Mommy, I'm writing in my diary about today. I don't remember what I've done, and I have nothing to write about.(엄마, 지금 일기를 쓰고 있는데요. 오늘 무슨 일이 있었는지 기억이 나질 않아요. 쓸 말이 없어요.)

M:Then why don't you write about making cookies with me today? We had a good time making the dough.(그럼 오늘 엄마랑 쿠키 만든 것에 대해 쓰면 어떠니? 반죽도 만들고 그랬잖아.)

C:Actually, I don't remember how we made the cookies. Can you write it all down for me?(순서가 어땠는지 기억이 안 나요. 엄마가 자세하게 적어주시면 안돼요?)

M:You should write your own diary. Come here. I'm going to tell you a story that might help you. Listen carefully.(그래도 자기 일기는 스스로 써야하는 거야. 이리 오렴. 너에게 도움이 될 만한 책을 읽어줄게. 잘 들어봐~.)


■ Shared Reading (읽으면서)

M:Deep in the woods there's an old white cabin filled with pumpkins. Oh, there's a delicious smell of pumpkin soup.(깊은 숲 속에 호박이 가득한 오래된 하얀 오두막집이 있어. 좋은 수프 냄새가 나는구나.)

C:I can see a bagpiping cat, a squirrel with a banjo, and a small singing duck.(백파이프를 연주하는 고양이랑 밴조를 연주하는 다람쥐 그리고 노래하는 작은 오리가 보이네요.)

M:Pumpkin soup. The best you've ever tasted. The cat sliced up the pumpkin and the squirrel stirred in the water and the duck put in just enough salt. It's perfect teamwork.(호박 수프. 먹어본 것 중에 최고의 맛이야. 고양이가 호박을 자르고 다람쥐가 물을 붓고 오리가 적당량의 소금을 넣지. 완벽한 팀워크야.)

C:Everyone has his own job to do. They look happy. But the duck wants to stir the soup this time. They're arguing and making a fuss.(모두가 각자 하는 일이 있네요. 행복해 보여요. 하지만 오리가 이번엔 수프를 젓겠다고 하는데요? 서로 말다툼을 하고 소란을 피워요.)

M:Packing up a wheelbarrow, the duck waddled away. And he doesn't come back. The cat and the squirrel went looking for him, but, seeing the duck happy with other friends, they just came back home.(오리는 수레에 짐을 꾸려 뒤뚱거리며 나가버렸구나. 그러곤 돌아오지 않지. 오리를 찾으러 나섰지만 오리가 친구들과 있는 모습을 보고 돌아올 수밖에 없구나.)

C:Huh? But the duck is already at home. And they're making some pumpkin soup together again. They're true friends. And this time, the duck is stirring the soup.(어? 하지만 오리가 집에 와 있어요. 이들은 또 같이 호박 수프를 만드네요. 정말 진정한 친구들이에요. 이번엔 오리가 수프를 젓고 있어요.)

M:The soup slopped out of the pot and the pot got burnt. But it was still the best tasting soup ever.(수프는 튀고 항아리는 타버리고 엉망이 되었구나. 하지만 수프 맛은 최고지.)

C:It's peaceful in the cabin again. I hope they'll get along from now on.(다시 한번 오두막집엔 평화가 찾아왔어요. 이제부터는 사이좋게 잘 지내야 할텐데….)



■ Post-Reading (읽은 후)

M:Does it look like the duck is making trouble again? It's the cat's job to play the bagpipe.(또 오리가 말썽을 부리는 것 같지? 백파이프는 고양이가 연주하는 것인데 말이야.)

C:Look at the squirrel's face. Holding the spoon, he's trying to stop the duck, and he looks like he means business.(다람쥐 표정을 좀 보세요. 스푼을 들고 말리는 표정이 아주 단호하게 보이는데요.)

M:But the duck is still smiling over something. What do you think will happen next?(오리는 그래도 뭐가 그리 좋은지 웃고 있구나. 과연 다음엔 어떤 일이 벌어질까?)

C:Hmm. They're still good friends, so they'll give him a chance to play the bagpipe. And then they'll have a fantastic concert together.(음. 그래도 친한 친구 사이니까 오리에게 백파이프를 연주할 기회를 줄 것 같아요. 그러고 나서 다함께 근사한 콘서트를 열 것 같아요.)



■ Reflection (돌아보기)

고양이, 오리, 다람쥐가 호박 수프를 맛있게 먹고 있습니다. 이 수프는 셋이서 똑같이 힘을 합해 만들었지요. 그러던 어느 날 다람쥐가 맡은 일을 오리가 대신하겠다고 우기면서 갈등이 시작되고 결국 오리는 집을 나가 버립니다. 마침내 고집 센 오리가 다시 돌아와서 서로의 역할을 존중하자 맛있는 호박 수프가 완성됩니다. 이 책은 Helen Cooper의 1998년 작품으로 아이들의 심리를 독창적인 색감으로 잘 그려냈습니다. 책의 줄거리를 통해 호박 수프를 만들면서 사용하는 요리에 관한 표현들이 많이 나옵니다. I'll make you some pumpkin soup.(호박 수프를 만들어 줄게.) I'll bet you like it so much.(정말 좋아하게 될거야.) Let's cut the pumpkin and vegetables in the pot.(호박과 야채를 냄비에 넣자.) Sizzle, Sizzle, Bubble, Bubble(지글지글, 보글보글) It smells good, isn't it?(냄새가 정말 좋지?) 아이들이 개학을 했습니다. 친구들과 한동안 떨어져 있다 다시 만나니 때로는 아껴주고 때로는 다투던 친구들의 소중함을 경험합니다. 관계를 잃고 자랑할 수 있는 업적은 많지 않지요. 서로 각자 존재의 의미를 깨닫고 배려가 무엇인지 배울 수 있는 작품입니다.
