[½ÃÄ«°í ´ÙÀ̾] "Rice Versus Bread?"
/À¯°æ¶õ ¹Ì±¹ Von Steuben °í±³ ±³»ç

I have cooked and eaten rice every weekend for about two months since I arrived in Chicago. I browsed grocery stores for Korean rice and other ingredients for various typical side dishes and purchased them. Then, I prepared some simple Korean-style foods, even though I have found that it is much easier to eat bread and other American fast food items. For me Korean food is easily digestible since I have eaten it for long time.

However, whenever I cook rice and other various Korean side dishes, which I am very familiar with, I can then really enjoy a small feast. But, after preparing Korean foods, there are many utensils left in the sink. I will then have to wash so many dishes. One day I took a meal of sliced bread and light ingredients (i.e. a sandwich) instead of rice. Then I realized that I had much more time to do something more productive. Unquestionably I still prefer rice over bread.

This article is not just about food. I am experiencing and learning a new culture. I have experienced the many differences in customs and value systems. For example, there are one's posture when talking, greeting to one another, saying thanks, different teaching styles and ways to resolve disciplinary problems and etiquette. These are specific areas I want to address. As the saying goes, "When in Rome, do as Romans do". Therefore, I try to follow the rule of this culture. But I would like to accept and adapt to the positive attributes of both cultures rather than only one specific culture. Difference is not wrong, however, it merely expresses the existence of diversity. I will try to understand and to embrace the various cultures in addition to my own Korean culture. In conclusion, I want to exemplify and adopt the best of both worlds.
