[시카고 다이어리] Checking Attendance

"Na Yung, Min Hyuck, Un Jee, Sun Min…, has he or she come today?"

As a matter of fact, I have called my students names in Korea for a week or so since the beginning of the first semester. Having memorized their names, because most of them rarely have been absent, I finished in a few seconds, saying, "Has All the class arrived?" However, when I took attendance in Von Steuben, that was not the case. "Kia, Jakima, Jakiea, Angelina, Angelica." They were not only all new names but hardly distinguishable. In addition, there were only around thirty students in the classroom and to my surprise; they were so diverse in their ethnicity and individuality that I could not tell who was who for a while. But, however, these students seemed to remember me clearly. They often greeted me with a smile inside the classroom or outside the school building, "Hi, Ms. Ryu∼"

Actually checking attendance is crucial in this school since absenteeism and tardiness can affect a student's grade. If a student continues cutting classes without a valid reason, the school will take some disciplinary action such as assigning one or two hours of detention as well as notifying his or her parents. Also if this pattern continues, it can cause school suspension. So students should be in their classrooms ready to work when the bell rings. In case they are not in the classroom right after the bell rings, many teachers I have met in the school will mark "tardy(T)".

In conclusion, I think that I have to make every effort to become familiar with quick and correct attendance-checking based on each student's individual personality. In spite of the extreme diversity and various cultures represented in the classrooms, I would say that all of us have the equal number of chromosomes forty-six in each cell and are human beings that have to be individually respected for their own uniqueness.


출석체크 / 유경란

"나영이， 민혁이， 윤지， 선민이… 오늘 다 왔니?"
한국에 있을 때는 학기 초 몇주 동안 이렇게 학생들의 이름을 불러왔다． 대부분 결석하는 경우가 없었기 때문에 학생들의 이름을 기억하는 것은 몇초 내에 끝내버리고 "모두 수업에 왔지?"라고 물었다，

하지만 여기 Von Steuben 고교에서는 그렇게 하기가 힘들었다． "Kia， Jakima， Jakiea， Angelina， Angelica" 등등 학생들의 이름은 모두 낯선데다가 구별하기도 힘들었다．30여명의 학생들이 모두 다양한 민족성과 개성을 갖고 있어서 누가 누군지 한동안은 알아챌 수가 없었다． 하지만 학생들은 나를 정확하게 기억하고 있는 듯 했다．가끔씩 나를 교실 안이나 학교 밖에서 만나면 웃음을 띠며 "Hi， Ms． Ryu∼"라며 인사를 건넸다．

사실 이 학교에서 출석체크는 매우 중요했다． 왜냐하면 결석이나 지각이 학생들의 성적에 영향을 주기 때문이다． 만약 학생이 계속 별다른 이유없이 수업을 빠지면 학교는 한두 시간 가량 근신을 시키고 부모님께 이를 알리는 징계를 내렸다． 물론 이런 일이 계속되면 정학처분을 내릴 수도 있다． 그래서 학생들은 종이 울리기 전에 수업준비를 하고 있어야 한다． 수업 종이 울린 뒤에도 학생이 교실에 있지 않으면 많은 선생님들은 "지각(T)"이라고 표시한다．

　결론적으로 나는 빠르고 정확하게 학생들의 개인 특징을 염두에 두고 출석 체크를 하는데 익숙해지도록 노력해야겠다고 생각하게 됐다． 비록 매우 다양하고 복잡한 문화가 교실에 존재한다고 해도 나는 모든 학생들이 하나의 세포속에 46개의 염색체를 가진, 하나 하나 제 각기 개성을 존중받아야 하는 인간이라는 점을 얘기하고 싶다.
