"Bedtime!" said the Mother.

"No!" said the Baby.

The Baby wants to stay up all night,

so he revs up his car and sets off on an adventure.

Before long, he finds himself all alone in a sleepy land.

But there is someone else who's not sleepy land.

But there is someone else who's not asleep….

someone who loves the Baby very much.

Pre-Reading (읽기 전)

C : Mom, I'll go to bed in a little while. I need ten minutes to finish this computer game, please.(엄마, 조금만 더 있다가 잘게요. 이번 게임은 10분만 더 있으면 끝나요.)

M : It's bed time. You'll ruin your eyesight if you play computer games for too long. Aren't you sleepy at all?(잘 시간이야. 컴퓨터를 그렇게 오래하면 눈도 나빠지고. 정말 잠이 오지 않니?)

C : No. I'm not sleepy because I took a nap this afternoon.(네. 오후에 낮잠을 잤더니 잠이 오질 않아요.)

M : Then I'm going to tell you a story that is more interesting than computer games. Come here, and let's read together.(그럼. 엄마가 게임 대신 더 재미있는 이야기 책을 읽어줄게. 이리 와서 같이 읽어보자.)

During Reading (읽으면서)

M : "Bedtime!" A mother is trying to get her baby to sleep. The baby is making a face, saying, "No!"("잠잘 시간이야" 하고 엄마랑 아기가 실랑이를 벌이고 있구나. 아기는 인상을 쓰며 자기 싫다고 짜증을 내고.)

C : Ha ha, he's just like me! The baby revved up his car, vrrruum-chugga-chug, then drove away as fast as he could. Wow, it's a huge tiger!(히히. 꼭 저 같은데요? 부릉부릉 하며 아기는 차를 타고 아주 빨리 떠나버리네요. 앗, 아주 큰 호랑이다!)

M : The baby asked the tiger to play with him, but the tiger said that night time is for snoring, not roaring, and told the babu to come back in the morning.(아기는 호랑이에게 같이 놀자고 하지만 호랑이는 으르렁거릴 때가 아니라 드르렁거릴 때라며 아침에 다시 오라고 하는구나.)

C : Look at the soldiers with toothbrushes. They're going to brush their teeth? I think they're saying that night time is for dreaming, not for parading, right?(칫솔을 든 군인들이에요. 양치하고 자려고 하나? 군인들도 꿈을 꿀 때지 행진할 때가 아니라고 말하는 것 같아요.)

M : Right. The baby drove on until he met some musicians, and he wanted to have a party and dance. But the musicians felt too tired and asked the baby to drive them home and promised him a lullaby instead.(맞아. 아기는 차를 타고 가다 음악가들을 만나 파티를 하고 놀려고 하지. 하지만 그들은 너무 피곤하다며 집에 데려다 달라고 하지만 대신 자장가를 불러준다고 하네.)

C : Everyone fell asleep to the lullaby. The little car, and even the moon. The baby is pushing his car in the dark.(자장가 때문에 모두 다 잠이 들었어요. 아기의 차도, 심지어 달님도요. 아기가 깜깜한 곳에서 차를 밀고 가고 있네요.)

M : But there's one person who is looking for him in the dark. Who could it be?(하지만 아기를 찾는 누군가 한 사람이 있어. 누굴까?)

C : Who is it? Oh, it's his mom! She's giving him a hug and laying him on the bed.(누구지? 아~엄마예요. 엄마는 아기를 안아주고 침대에 아기를 포근하게 눕혀주고 계세요.)

After-Reading (읽은 후)

M : What are some things we can do if we don't get sleepy? Playing computer games?(잠이 오지 않으면 할 수 있는 일이 뭐가 있을까? 게임하는 것?)

C : No. Um, if I count sheep, to one hundred or one thousand, then I get sleepy.(아니에요. 음. 전 양을 백 마리, 아니 천 마리 세면 잠이 오던걸요?)

M : And is there any other way?(그리고 또 어떤 일을 할 수 있을까?)

C : Ha ha, I definitely get sleepy when you sing a lullaby. Mom, please sing one for me.(히히… 엄마가 자장가를 불러주면 잠이 와요. 엄마, 자장가 불러주세요~.)


Reflection (돌아보기)

아이들의 꿈은 어떤 색깔일까요? 파스텔 톤으로 아이들 꿈속 여정을 따뜻하고 포근하게 그려낸 헬렌 쿠퍼(Helen Cooper)의 1997년 작품입니다. 아이들은 왜 잠자기를 싫어할까요? 엄마 말에 아랑곳하지 않고 잠자기 싫어 고집을 피우던 아이는, 장난감 자동차를 타고 이내 상상의 공간으로 이동합니다. 잠이 와서 함께 놀아 줄 수 없다는 호랑이도 만나고, 졸려서 행진을 못하는 병사들, 그리고 잠잘 시간이라며 눈을 감는 달님도 만납니다. 다음번에는 아이가 타고 있던 자동차마저 잠이 들어 버립니다. 결국 그 외로운 시간에 아이를 꼭 안아 주는 것은 엄마입니다. 아이는 그제야 잘 시간임을 깨닫고 엄마 품에서 천사 같은 얼굴로 잠에 빠져듭니다. 더 놀고 싶어 잠들지 못하는 아이의 침대 위에서 읽어주기 좋은 책입니다. 책을 통해, 운율(Rhyme)이 같은 단어를 찾아 익힐 수 있습니다. Snoring-Roaring, Dreaming-Parading, Resting-Racing, Tired-Instead, Played-Lulled, Trundled-Bundled. 아이들에게 아주 어릴 때부터 책의 감촉(Bookinship)을 느끼게 해 주세요. 책을 손에 쥐고 잠든 아이, 한 번도 실패한 적 없는 엄마표 고액 과외입니다.
