[우길주교수의 영어동화] Big Sister and Little Sister

Once there was a big sister and a little sister.

Big sister always took care of little sister.

Big sister always knew what to do.

But one day little sister wanted to be alone.

She was tired of hearing big sister say

"Do it this way," or "Sit here," or "Go there."

So little sister slipped away, and big sister

couldn't find her anywhere.

It took something very special to make the sisters

realize they both could take care of each other.

Pre-Reading (읽기 전)

C : Mom, here are the muffins I made at school for you and Sarah.(엄마, 오늘 엄마랑 Sarah 주려고 학교에서 만든 머핀을 들고 왔어요.)

M : Wow! They smell nice. But I'm afraid Sarah won't eat anything now because she's caught a bad cold.(와~ 냄새가 근사한데~. 그런데 Sarah가 감기에 걸려 아무것도 먹으려 하지 않구나.)

C : Then do you want me to bring her a cup of warm milk instead?(그러면 제가 우유를 따뜻하게 데워 먹일까요?)

M : She's sleeping now, so I'll do it later. Come here and I'll tell you a story about good sisters like you two.(지금 자고 있으니 내가 나중에 줄게. 이리 오렴. 엄마가 너희들처럼 좋은 언니, 동생이 나오는 이야기를 들려줄 테니.)

During Reading (읽으면서)

M : Once there lived two sisters. The big sister always took care of her little sister. When the younger one jumped rope, the older one made sure that her sister stayed on the sidewalk.(옛날에 언니와 여동생이 살았어. 큰언니는 항상 여동생을 돌보지. 줄넘기를 할 때도 인도에 안전하게 있나 살피고.)

C : It's good for the little sister to have such a nice older sister.(여동생은 그런 좋은 언니가 있으니 참 좋겠어요.)

M : When the little sister rode her bike or walked to school, the big sister took care of her. The little sister thought there was nothing the big sister couldn't do.(자전거를 탈 때나 학교를 갈 때에도 작은 여동생을 돌보지. 큰언니는 못하는 게 없다고 생각할 정도니까.)

C : Uh oh. The little sister is crying, and the big sister is taking something out of her pocket.(어? 여동생이 울고 있어요. 언니의 호주머니에서 무언가를 꺼내는데요?)

M : The big sister is calming her down by putting her arm around her and saying with a handkerchief, "Here, blow."(언니는 팔로 동생을 안고 손수건을 꺼내 "여기, 코풀어."하며 동생을 달래고 있어.)

C : Mom, the little sister is slipping out of house while her sister is making something in the kitchen. No, don't….(엄마, 동생이 언니가 부엌에서 무얼 만드는 동안 몰래 나가는 것 같아요. 안 돼~.)

M : The little sister is tired of her big sister saying "Sit here." "Go there." "Do it this way." Little sister doesn't seem know her big sister's love, does she?(여동생은 언니의 "여기 앉아." "저리로 가." "이렇게 해봐."라는 말에 너무 싫증이 난 거야. 언니의 마음을 몰라주는 것 같지?)

C : Little sister's hiding in a field of daisies, and big sister is looking for her. I hope she finds her soon. Let's turn the page.(동생이 데이지 풀밭에 숨어 있어요. 언니는 동생을 찾아다니고 있고요. 언니가 꼭 동생을 찾아야 하는데, 엄마 우리 뒷장을 넘겨봐요.)

After-Reading (읽은 후)

M : What do you think will happen later on? Can you guess and make your own story?(뒤에는 어떤 일이 일어날까? 상상해서 너의 이야기로 만들어 볼 수 있겠니?)

C : Um, when it gets dark, little sister will get scared and she'll cry out for her sister, and she'll say she's never going to do it again.(음… 날이 어둑어둑해지면 동생이 무서워서 울어 동생이 언니를 크게 부르며 찾을 것 같아요. 그리고 다시는 그러지 않겠다고 하겠죠?)

M : Big sister finally found her and bursts into happy tears. And this time, little sister puts her arm around the older sister and says with a handkerchief, "Here, blow."(결국 언니는 동생을 찾아 기쁜 마음에 울음을 터뜨리지. 동생이 이번에는 언니를 안아 손수건을 꺼내 "여기, 코풀어."하며 달래주는데?)

C : That's a really good story. I'm going to be a good sister to Sarah. I promise.(정말 따뜻한 이야기예요. 저도 Sarah에게 이런 좋은 언니가 꼭 될 거예요. 약속할게요.)

Reflection (돌아보기)

작가인 샤롯 조로우는 6살 연상의 언니 도로시와의 어린 시절 경험을 바탕으로 1966년에 'Big Sister, Little Sister'를 쓰게 됩니다. 그녀의 이 작품은 마치 잘 쓰인 한 장의 그림엽서처럼 정직하고 편안합니다. 그것은 아이들의 눈높이까지 낮게 내려가서, 아이들 키만큼 자란 데이지 수풀 속에서, 그들이 접하는 세상을 같은 속도로 느끼고, 그것을 이해하고 수용하는 과정까지 인내심을 가지고 지켜보기 때문입니다. 이 책을 통해 과거형과 과거진행형 시제들을 익힐 수 있습니다. She rode her bike.(그녀는 자전거를 탔습니다.) She gave her little sister a ride.(어린 동생을 자전거에 태우고 다녔습니다.) They were playing in the fields.(푸른 초원에서 함께 놀았습니다.) She was walking to school.(그녀는 학교로 가고 있는 중이었어요.) 다투지 않고 자라는 아이들이 있을까요? 저도 이 스토리를 빌려 이제는 사십 줄에 든 제 동생과의 어린 시절을 잠시 떠올려 보았습니다. 현실이 늘 행복한 건 아니지만, 어린이 책이 묘사하는 유토피아적 현실은 고단한 현실 아래 놓여있는 참된 진실을 읽어내도록 일상에 지친 어른들을 다독거리기도 합니다.
