Dear Mama,
I feel so pretty in your dress
that you made over for me.
I hope you don't miss it too much.
And, dearest Grandma,

The train is rocking me to sleep,
and everytime I doze off,

Pre-Reading (읽기 전)

C : Mom, the flowers by the road were so pretty that I wanted to take pictures of them.(엄마, 길가에 핀 코스모스가 너무 예뻐서 친구들과 사진을 찍고 싶었어요.)

M : Did you? I wonder what kind of flowers they were.(그래? 어떤 꽃이 피어 있었는지 궁금하구나.)

C : Umm… They were small yellow buds. I think they were chrysanthemums.(음… 다 피지 않은 노란 국화들을 봤지요.)

M : Mom's going to tell you a story today about a girl who loves flowers. Come here and listen.(엄마가 오늘은 꽃을 사랑하는 한 소녀의 이야기를 들려줄게. 이리와서 잘 들어봐.)



During Reading (읽으면서)

M : Look at this big garden. This is Lydia, and she's gathering tomatoes with her grandmother. Lydia is going to stay at uncle Jim's house because her father has been out of work for a long time.(이 넓은 정원을 보렴. 소녀의 이름은 Lydia이고 할머니와 함께 토마토를 따고 있네. Lydia는 아빠가 실직을 하는 바람에 도시에 사는 외삼촌 Jim에게 가야 하지.)

C : She must be really sad. Her family is seeing her off at the train station. She's sitting on a cosy chair, looking outside.(가족과 떨어져서 슬프겠어요. 가족들이 역에 나와서 Lydia를 배웅하나 보네요. Lydia가 기차 안에서 푹신한 의자에 앉아 밖을 보고 있네요.)

M : Lydia is good at gardening but knows nothing about baking, which uncle Jim does for a living. Look here. Her grandmother gave her seeds of cosmos, marigold, and zinnia in envelopes.(Lydia는 원예일은 아주 잘하는데 외삼촌이 하시는 빵 굽는 일은 아직 서툴다는구나. 이것 봐. 할머니께서 코스모스, 금잔화, 백일초 씨앗을 봉투에 담아 주셨구나.)

C : She finally met uncle Jim, but he looks so stubborn. I feel sorry for her.(드디어 외삼촌을 만났어요. 하지만 아주 완고한 얼굴을 하고 계세요. Lydia가 좀 불쌍해지려고 그래요.)

M : She becomes friends with Ed and Emma while working together at the bakery, and they teach her how to knead bread. And Lydia discovers a secret place and makes fantastic plans.(빵집에서 일하는 Ed와 Emma와 친해지고 빵을 반죽하는 법을 배우게 되지. 그리고 Lydia는 아주 비밀스러운 곳을 찾아 멋진 일을 계획한단다.)

C : Oh my! Isn't this a rooftop? What is she going to do here?(세상에~ 여긴 옥상이 아닌가요? 여기서 무슨 일을 계획한단 말이죠?)

M : She planted various kinds of flowers on the rooftop. Aren't they amazing? To show his thanks, uncle Jim gave her a present, a big cake covered with flowers, and she got to go back home again.(Lydia는 옥상에 아주 많은 꽃을 심는단다. 굉장하지? 감사의 뜻으로 외삼촌은 큰 케이크를 선물하고 Lydia는 다시 고향으로 간단다.)

C : It's so touching. I think uncle Jim was moved by her beautiful heart and he does love her.(아주 감동적이에요. 꽃 같은 Lydia의 마음이 외삼촌을 움직였을 거예요. 외삼촌도 Lydia를 사랑하겠죠?)



After-Reading (읽은 후)

M : If you were Lydia, what kind of flowers would you like to plant on a rooftop?(네가 Lydia라면 어떤 꽃을 옥상에 심을 것 같니?)

C : I'd plant grapevines, and when they have fruits, I'd have a nice party with my friends.(전 포도나무를 심어 포도가 열리면 사람들을 초대해서 아주 근사한 파티를 열고 싶을 거예요.)

M : What would you do for uncle Jim, who rarely smiles?(좀처럼 잘 웃지 않는 외삼촌을 위해 어떤 일을 할 수 있을까?)

C : I'd engrave the words "I love you" on a beanpod and give it to him as a present when it blossoms. He'd smile then, wouldn't he?(콩 씨앗에 "외삼촌, 사랑해요."라는 말을 새겨서 꽃이 피면 외삼촌에게 선물로 줄 거예요. 그럼 함박미소를 지으시겠죠?) 부산교대 영어교육과 교수 kjwoo@bnue.ac.kr



Reflection (돌아보기)

평화롭고 조용한 시골마을에서 살던 리디아는 가정 형편이 어려워 도시에서 빵가게를 하는 외삼촌 댁으로 보내집니다. 무뚝뚝한 외삼촌을 기쁘게 하기 위해 리디아는 빵가게 옥상을 멋진 꽃밭으로 꾸밉니다. 할머니가 보내준 꽃씨로 정성스레 꽃밭을 가꾸어 이것을 본 완고한 외삼촌의 마음도 눈 녹듯이 녹아내립니다. Lydia Grace의 이 사랑스러운 책은 David Small의 수채화 같은 아름다운 그림과 어울려 1998년 칼데콧 상을 수상했습니다.

이 책은 리디아 스스로 사랑하는 가족에게서 온 소중한 편지를 모은 것인데, 편지쓰기와 관련한 여러 형식과 자주 쓰는 표현을 익힐 수 있습니다. Papa has been out of work for a long time.(아버지는 오랫동안 실직 상태였다.) I'm too shy to say to your face.(너무 부끄러워 직접 대면하기 어려워요.) They look as of they've been waiting for me.(오랫동안 나를 기다려온 것처럼 보입니다.) 책에서 익힌 문장을 중심으로 짧은 영어 편지를 써 보면 어떨까요? 모든 지식이 아이콘 속에 감추어진 정보화 시대에, 미디어 매체가 줄 수 없는 아날로그의 감동을 우리 아이들에게 전해주고 싶다면 이것도 기성세대의 욕심일까요?
