[우길주 교수의 영어동화] The Giving Tree

The boy stayed away for a long time.

And when he came back, the tree was so happy

"Come, Boy," she whispered,

"Come and play"

"I am too old and sad to play," said the boy.

"I want a boat that will take me far away from here.

Can you give me a boat?"

"Cut down my trunk and make a boat," said the tree.

"Then you can sail away… and be happy."

So the boy cut down her trunk and made a boat. And the tree was happy.

Pre-Reading (읽기 전)

C : Mom, I feel autumn is just around the corner. The leaves are dancing and the breeze is refreshing.(엄마, 정말 가을이 온 것 같아요. 나무들이 살랑거리고, 바람도 상쾌해요.)

M : Right. The trees in front of our house look like dancing.(그렇구나. 집 앞의 나무들이 춤을 추는 것 같네.)

C : It would be really good to take a nap in shades of lots of trees, huh?(우리 집 정원에 나무가 많이 있어서 그늘에 누워 낮잠을 자면 좋을 텐데요. 그죠?)

M : Mommy is gonna tell you a story of a very special tree. I bet you'd like it.(엄마가 오늘은 아주 특별한 나무에 대한 이야기를 해줄게. 너도 아마 좋아할 거야.)

During Reading (읽으면서)

M : Once there was a tree. And the tree loved a little boy. He would come and gather the leaves of the tree.(나무 한 그루가 있었어. 그리고 나무는 한 작은 소년을 사랑했지. 매일 놀러와서 나뭇잎을 모았단다.)

C : Mom, the little boy is climbing up the tree. Doesn't it hurt? He looks like a Tarzan swinging back and forth from the branches. Seems like exciting, though.(엄마, 소년이 나무에 올라가고 있어요. 나무가 아프진 않을까요? 나뭇가지에 매달려 왔다 갔다 하는 모습이 꼭 타잔 같아요. 신나겠다.)

M : What are they falling down from the tree? Yes, they are apples. It is an apple tree. They are playing a hide-and-seek and he would take a nap in the shade.(나무에서 떨어지는 게 뭘까? 맞아. 사과구나. 사과나무였어. 아이는 숨바꼭질도 하고 피곤하면 나무 그늘에서 잠도 자는구나.)

C : It's good. Mommy, they are really loving each other. Wow, as time pass by, the boy's grown into a man.(좋겠다. 엄마, 나무와 소년은 정말 서로를 아끼고 사랑하나 봐요. 와~시간이 지나 소년이 훌쩍 커버렸어요.)

M : The boy is too big to climb up the tree. And the tree told him to sell her apples to have money.(소년은 너무 커버려 더 이상 나무에 올라갈 수 없단다. 나무는 소년에게 자신의 사과를 팔아 돈을 벌어 쓰라고 하는구나.)

C : It is a really nice giving tree. You see, he's a man. My, How come he's carrying all the branches away?(정말 착한 나무예요. 이제 소년은 아저씨가 되었어요. 세상에, 왜 나뭇가지를 다 가지고 가는거죠?)

M : The tree gave all the branches for his house and her thick trunk for his boat when he wanted to take a trip. But the giving tree was happy.(나무는 소년이 집을 짓는다니 나뭇가지를 내어주고 먼 여행을 떠난다니 보트를 만들라고 또 자신을 내어준단다. 그래도 나무는 행복했어.)

C : It's quite moving. The giving tree gave the boy already grown old a stump to sit on and rest.(너무 감동적이에요. 나무는 이제 늙은이가 되어버린 소년에게 앉아 쉴 수 있는 그루터기까지 내어주는 걸요?)

After-Reading (읽은 후)

M : Can you tell me who are the people living like what the giving tree is doing here?(이야기를 읽고 나서 아낌없이 주는 나무처럼 살고 있는 사람들이 누가 있는지 생각해 볼 수 있겠니?)

C : Well, maybe they are street cleaners. They're cleaning up the streets very early in the morning while we are sleeping.(음… 환경미화원들이 아닐까요? 아침 일찍 일어나서 피곤하지만 거리를 깨끗하게 청소를 하시잖아요?)

M : And are they someone else?(또 어떤 사람이 있을까?)

C : (hugging) And mom, you, I love most. You love me all the time. You're it the most giving person in the world.((안으면서) 바로 엄마예요. 제가 제일 사랑하는 우리 엄마, 항상 저를 사랑해 주시잖아요. 엄마는 최고의 아낌없이 주는 나무예요~.)

Reflection (돌아보기)

'The Giving Tree'는 Shel Silverstein의 1964년 작품입니다. 간결한 펜화로 그려진 그림은 오히려 어떤 화려한 그림보다도 절제된 사랑을 잘 표현해 냅니다. 나무는 주기만 하면서 행복해합니다. 그래서 가지도 내어 주고 또 줄기도 내어 주고 마지막에는 달랑 남은 그루터기마저 내어줍니다. 그래도 나무는 행복해합니다. 이런 불공평한 사랑이 있을까요? 그런데 마지막 장을 덮으면 소년과의 즐거웠던 시절이 오버랩되면서 왜 아픈 감동이 밀려올까요? 우리는 흔히 세월이 흐른다고 하지만 사실은 우리가 정지되어 있는 시간 속을 항해하는지도 모릅니다.

이 책은 무리하게 질문과 답을 끌어내지 않아도 좋고, 영어 표현을 익히지 않아도 좋습니다. 어떤 것들은 그저 그대로가 더 좋을 때가 있습니다. 그래서 아이들과 엄마들을 위해서 의도된 이 짧은 지면도 또 다른 누군가에게는 아낌없이 주는 나무 같은 공간이 될 수 있음을 배웁니다. 다음은 22년생이라 밝히시고 며칠 전 제게 메일을 주신 최기대 선생님 글입니다. "선생 글 애독자입니다. 영어도 배우고 한글도 배웁니다, 누가 영어 잘하는 사람 한글도 잘한다고 하던데 맛깔스런 한글과, 외치고 소리 지르는 TV가 아니고 가슴에 와 닿는 글을 조용히 잘 배우고 있습니다, 건승하길 빌며."
