Trying to outdo her brother, however,

Pre-Reading (읽기 전)

C : Hey Mom, I have here a fancy magic wand and a magic hat. Abracadabra! Guess who I am.(엄마, 여기 아주 멋진 마술 지팡이가 있고 전 마술 모자를 쓰고 있어요~ 수리수리마수리~. 전 누굴까요?)

M : Wow! Let me guess... Maybe the cutest magician in the world?(와~ 과연 누굴까… 맞혀볼게… 아마도 세상에서 아주 귀여운 마술사가 아닐까?)

C : Wouldn't it be great if I were a magician and I could change this cup into a flower vase?(정말 제가 마술사고 여기 있는 컵을 꽃병으로 바꿀 수 있다면 얼마나 멋질까요?)

M : Come here and let's read this book together. You can be a wonderful magician if you and your friends work hard together.(이리 와서 이 책을 같이 읽어보자. 너도 친구들과 함께라면 멋진 마술사가 될 수 있을걸?)

During Reading (읽으면서)

M : You see, Matthew is a cute little magician like you. He's taking the magic flowers from his hat. Amazing, huh?(Matthew도 너처럼 귀여운 꼬마 마술사구나. 모자에서 마법의 꽃을 꺼내고… 대단한걸?)

C : But Mom, Jessica thinks Matthew's magic is just a trick. And she's going to show real magic by waving a magic wand.(그런데 Jessica는 Matthew의 마술이 속임수라고 생각하나 봐요. Jessica도 마술지팡이를 휘두르며 마술을 보여주려나 봐요.)

M : Oh, no… They're arguing about who is the best magician. Seeing this made their mom angry. She tells them that their magic could be even better if they work together.(안돼. 서로 최고의 마술사라고 싸우는구나. 이걸 보신 엄마는 화가 나셔서 같이 힘을 합치면 더 멋진 마술이 될 거라고 말씀하시는데….)

C : Mom, look. There's powder coming out of Jessica's wand. It looks like real magic.(엄마, 보세요. Jessica의 지팡이에서 파우더가 나와요. 진짜 마술인가봐요.)

M : Presto Change-O, Jiggledy Jog! I think Jessica turned her mother into a frog by mistake. Croak! What do you think will happen next?(변해라~ 얍~ Jessica가 그만 엄마를 개구리로 만들어 버렸나봐. 개굴~ 이제 무슨 일이 일어날까?)

C : There's nothing they can do. Matthew can't turn their mom back into a human. Oops! The frog is escaping into the woods.(소용이 없어요. Matthew가 주문을 외워도 안되고… 앗! 개구리가 숲속으로 도망을 치네요~)

M : Who do you think is the mother among all the frogs? The kids are chanting a spell together like their mom told them to. Zippity Zap, Jiggledy Jog.(숲속의 많은 개구리 중 누가 엄마일까? Jessica와 Matthew는 엄마 말씀대로 같이 주문을 외운단다. 수리수리마수리~.)

C : All of a sudden, their mom appeared! Nothing's impossible if people work together. And the kids are doing a fantastic magic show for their friends. How wonderful~.(갑자기 엄마가 나타나셨어요! 같이 힘을 합치면 안될 일이 없어요. 아이들이 서로 도와서 아주 멋진 마술쇼를 하네요~ 멋지다~.)

After-Reading (읽은 후)

M : What would you like to do if you were a real magician?(네가 정말 마술사라면 어떤 일을 해보고 싶니?)

C : I'd like to turn my teddy bear into a real live bear so that I could play with it.(전 내 곰 인형을 정말 살아있는 곰으로 만들어 재미있게 놀고 싶어요.)

M : Is there any magic that you and your friends could do together that would be better than what you could do by yourself?(혼자서 하는 것보다 친구랑 같이해서 더 멋진 그런 마술공연이 있을까?)

C : Sure. It would be really strange but wonderful if we could exchange our bodies for a while. It might be a little scary, though.(그럼요. 잠시 서로의 몸을 빌린다면… 이상하지만 얼마나 신기할까요? 조금 무섭기도 하지만요.)


Reflection (돌아보기)

[Presto Change-O]는 Audrey Wood의 2005년 작품입니다. 늘 다투면서 자라는 귀여운 아이들의 모습이 익살스럽고 재치 넘치는 그림으로 옮겨져 만화 같은 느낌을 잘 살렸습니다. 책을 읽은 후에 현실 세계와 환상의 세계에 대해서, 그리고 혼자 하는 것과 함께하는 것의 차이에 대해서 아이와 함께 얘기해 보세요. 무슨 일이든 함께하면 더 잘할 수 있다는 엄마의 말, Your magic will be better if you work together.(함께하면 더 멋진 마술이 될 거야.) 이 세상에서 가장 귀한 엄마를 다시 되찾아 올 수 있게 하는 귀한 진리가 됩니다.

이 이야기를 통해 일상생활에서 흔히 사용되는 생활영어를 익혀보세요. She was such a good mother.(좋은 엄마였어.) She's jumping into the woods.(숲으로 뛰어들었어.)
