A miller had three sons, and when he died

he left them nothing but his mill, his donkey, and his cat.

But it didn't take long time to decide who should get what.

The eldest got the mill, the second got the donkey,

Pre-Reading (읽기 전)

C : Mommy, I saw a really pretty puppy on the way home.(엄마, 집에 오는 길에 아주 예쁜 강아지를 봤어요.)

M : What kind of puppy was it? What did it look like?(어떤 강아지였는데? 어떻게 생겼니?)

C : It was a poodle with lots of curly hair. It was wearing shoes and even had a hairpin on its head.(털이 많은 푸들이었는데요, 신발도 신었고 머리에 핀도 꽂았다니까요.)

M : Really? Today, mommy's going to read you a story about a very clever kitty who wears boots. I think you'll like the story.(그래? 엄마가 오늘은 부츠를 신은 아주 영리한 고양이 이야기를 들려줄게.)

During Reading (읽으면서)

M : A long time ago, a miller had three sons, and when he died, he left them only three things. The eldest got the mill, the second a donkey, and the youngest a cat.(한 방앗간 주인은 아들만 3명이 있었는데 돌아가실 때 첫째아들에겐 방앗간을, 둘째에겐 당나귀, 셋째에겐 고양이 한 마리만을 남겼어.)

C : Just a cat? But I guess it must be really smart, right?(달랑 고양이 한 마리만을요? 그래도 아마 아주 영리한 고양이가 아닐까요?)

M : With bran and thistle, Puss in Boots caught a rabbit in a sack. Then he brought it to the King, saying it was from the Marquis of Carabas-the name he gave for his master.(장화 신은 고양이는 가방에 겨와 엉겅퀴 잎을 넣어 토끼를 사냥했구나. 그러곤 왕에게 토끼를 바치며 Carabas 후작-자기 주인을 지칭하는 -이 보낸 거라고 하지.)

C : Mom, look at this. The Marquis of Carabas fell into a river. Lucky for him, the King's guards are pulling him out of the river.(엄마, 이것 좀 보세요. Carabas 후작이 물에 빠졌어요. 다행히 신하들이 구해주고 있지만요.)

M : The King offered the Marquis of Carabas one of his finest suits, and the Marquis fell in love with the princess. In the meantime, Puss scared the peasants into telling the King that all the nearby land belonged to the Marquis of Carabas.(왕은 Carabas 후작에게 좋은 옷을 가져다 입혔고 후작은 공주와 사랑에 빠지게 되지. 그동안 고양이는 사람들에게 땅이 모두 Carabas 후작의 것이라고 왕에게 말하라고 겁을 주고 있고 말이야.)

C : Wow, Puss is talking to the Ogre now. Look, mom. The Ogre turned into a mouse, and Puss ate him!(와~고양이가 Ogre집에 와서 이야기를 나누고 있네요! 엄마, 보세요. Ogre이 쥐로 변했는데 고양이가 잡아먹었어요!)

M : Thinking that the castle belonged to the Marquis of Carabas, the King allowed the Marquis to marry the princess. After that, Puss caught mice just for fun.(Ogre의 성이 Carabas 후작의 것이라고 생각한 왕은 드디어 결혼을 허락한단다. 그 뒤로 고양이는 재미로 쥐를 잡곤 하지.)

C : Puss looks so comfortable lying on the carpet with his boots off. He's so smart.(부츠를 벗고 카펫에 누워있는 고양이가 참 편안해 보이네요. 정말 똑똑한 고양이에요.)

After-Reading (읽은 후)

M : What would you say to Puss in Boots if he came to our house?(만약에 장화 신은 고양이가 우리 집에 온다면 어떤 말을 해주고 싶을까?)

C : I'd like to say, "Would you be my friend? I can be a good friend to you, too."(나와 친구가 되어줄 수 있니? 나도 너처럼 좋은 친구가 되어줄 수 있을 거야 라고 말하고 싶어요.)

M : What kind of animal would you like to have if it could speak and be as smart as Puss in Boots?(그럼 장화 신은 고양이처럼 영리하고 말을 하는 다른 동물을 가지게 된다면 어떤 동물이 좋을까?)

C : It would be nice to be friends with a clever dolphin, Just thinking about swimming and travelling in the ocean together makes me happy.(영리한 돌고래와 친구가 되었으면 좋겠어요. 같이 수영도 하고 바다를 같이 여행한다는 생각만 해도 정말 즐거운 걸요.)

Reflection (돌아보기)

[장화신은 고양이]로 더 잘 알려진 이 이야기는, 프랑스에서 어린이 동화의 아버지로 불리는 샤를 페로(Charles Perrault)의 1990년 작품입니다. 전해 내려오는 민담을 새롭게 재구성한 스토리를 바탕으로 시시각각 변하는 고양이의 능청스러운 표정을 잘 살려 그해 칼데콧상을 수상했습니다. 이 책은 전체 스토리 라인이 비교적 긴 문장들로 구성되어 있지만, 일상생활에 자주 사용되는 대화체를 중심으로 다음 표현을 익혀 보는 것도 좋습니다. "Oh well, why not give it a try?"(그냥 한번 시도해 보는 거야) "Do as I say."(내가 하라는 대로 해 봐) "What a pity it would be."(불쌍하기도 하지) "Let's have a look inside."(안쪽을 한번 둘러보자). 아버지가 돌아가시고 형들에게 달랑 고양이 한 마리만 유산으로 받은 주인공이 고양이의 꾀로 공주와 결혼하는 이야기는 민속 동화의 전형적 도식인 억압-구원-행복과 맥이 닿아 있습니다. 아이들은 판타지를 좋아합니다. 특히 인간처럼 행동하는 동물 이야기를 좋아합니다. 하지만 왕을 속이는 고양이, 후작에게 반하는 공주, 고양이에게 휘둘리는 막내아들 등은, 또 다른 관점으로 보면 천진하고 선한 것이 다른 쪽에서는 무식하고 악한 것이 될 수 있음을 보여줍니다.
