[우길주 교수의 영어동화] TOPS & BOTTOMS

Bear has lots of money and lots of land - and he's lazy.

Hare has nothing but a hungry family - and he's smart.

Hare is sure there's a way to share Bear's wealth, so he and Mrs. Hare cook up a plan.

Then Hare hops on down the road to Bear's place and proposes that Bear donate land, Hare handle labor, and they spilt the crops in half.

All Bear has to do is choose the half he wants - tops of bottoms.

Sleepy Bear takes tops but finds once the harvest is in that he's been tricked by clever Hare!

Pre-Reading (읽기 전)

C : Mommy, I love salad. This is broccoli, this is carrot, and this is lettuce.(엄마, 전 샐러드가 너무 맛있어요. 이건 브로콜리, 이건 당근, 그리고 양배추예요.)

M : Do you know what this vegetable is? It's very dark red.(이건 어떤 채소인지 아니? 아주 진한 빨간색인데.)

C : I've never seen this before. Yuck! It tastes a little bitter.(처음 보는 것인데요? 윽. 맛이 좀 써요.)

M : This is a beet and we eat the roots of the plant. Now I'm going to tell you a story about a lazy bear and a hare who grows several kinds of vegetables.(이건 비트라고 하는 채소인데 뿌리를 먹지. 엄마가 오늘은 여러 가지 채소를 재배하는 토끼와 게으른 곰의 이야기를 해줄게.)

During Reading (읽으면서)

M : Once upon a time there lived a very lazy bear who had lots of money and land. But the bear sleeps all day long. And not far down the road lived a hare.(옛날에 아주 게으른 곰이 살았는데 돈도 많고 땅도 많이 가지고 있었단다. 그렇지만 곰은 매일 잠만 자는구나. 그리고 근처에 토끼가 살고 있어.)

C : Mommy, the hare and his family look very poor. I guess they have nothing to eat.(엄마, 토끼와 그의 가족들은 아주 가난해 보여요. 아마도 먹을 게 없나 봐요.)

M : Right. The clever hare wants to be a business partner with the bear. The hare will do the hard work of planting and harvesting the lazy bear's land, and they can divide the harvest in half.(그래. 영리한 토끼는 곰과 동업을 하려고 해. 게으른 곰의 땅에서 토끼가 열심히 일해서 수확을 하는 거지. 그리고 수확하는 식물을 중간 정도에서 나누기로 해.)

C : That's a good idea. The bear wants the top half, and the hare the bottom half. I wonder what kind of vegetable the hare will grow.(좋은 생각이네요. 곰은 식물의 위쪽 반을, 토끼는 아래쪽 반을 원하네요. 토끼는 어떤 채소를 기를까 궁금해요.)

M : So they agreed to the deal. The clever hare and his family planted, watered, and weeded. They worked very hard.(그럼 거래가 성사되었어. 영리한 토끼와 그의 가족은 식물을 심고 물을 주고 잡초를 뽑고 있어. 열심히 일을 했어.)

C : It's time to harvest. The hare and his family are digging up the carrots, the radishes, and look, beets. And the poor bear has nothing but a pile of leaves.(이제 수확을 할 때가 왔나 봐요. 토끼는 당근, 무를 파고 있어요 아. 엄마, 여기 비트도 있어요. 그리고 곰은 식물의 위쪽인 잎사귀만 가지게 되었네요.)

M : The bear got angry, so he wanted the bottom half of the harvest. So the clever hare gathered up the top half of the lettuce, the broccoli, and the celery. And the bear got nothing but the useless roots.(화가 난 곰은 이번엔 아래쪽을 원하지. 하지만 영리한 토끼는 식물의 위쪽을 먹는 상추, 브로콜리, 셀러리를 모으고 곰은 또 쓸모없는 뿌리를 가지게 되었어.)

C : Oh, the poor bear! The clever hare and his family must be very happy with lots of food.(불쌍한 곰…, 그리고 영리한 토끼네는 이제 먹을 것이 아주 많아져서 행복하겠어요.)

After-Reading (읽은 후)

M : Can you remember the names of the vegetables in the story? What are the vegetables that we eat the roots of?(이야기 속에 나왔던 채소의 이름을 기억할 수 있겠니? 뿌리를 먹는 채소는 뭐가 있었지?)

C : That's easy. Carrots, radishes, and yuck, the bitter beets.(쉬워요. 당근과 무, 그리고 윽, 맛이 쓴 비트도 있었어요.)

M : Then what are the vegetables that we can eat the tops of?(그럼 채소의 위쪽을 먹는 것은 어떤 것들이 있었지?)

C : Lettuce, broccoli, and celery. Mommy, do we have some celery at home? It's yummy with mayo.(상추, 브로콜리, 셀러리가 있었어요. 엄마, 우리집에 셀러리도 있어요? 마요네즈랑 먹으면 맛있는데.)

Reflection (돌아보기)

작가 Janet Stevens은 우리에게 잘 알려진 'To market, To market'으로 최고 작품상을 받았고, 이 작품 역시 재미있는 동물 캐릭터를 잘 살린 그림으로 칼데콧상을 수상하였습니다. 작품에 등장하는 채소 그림들은 그녀가 직접 재배한 것이어서 사실성이 뛰어납니다. 글자가 좀 많아서 어려울 수 있는 내용을 반복되는 스토리로 잘 풀어냈습니다. 책에서 배울 수 있는 영어표현으로, We can be business partner.(우리는 동업자야.) What will it be?(어떤 것을 택할래?) It's done deal.(거래가 성사되었어.) 등이 있습니다. 엄마는 How many different vegetables can you name?(채소 이름을 아는 대로 말해 볼까?) Have you ever heard of "tortoise and hare"?(토티오와 헤어라는 말을 들어본 적 있니?) 등의 질문으로 아이들의 사전 지식을 끌어내는 것이 필요합니다. 책읽기의 가장 기본적인 전략은 질문을 던지는 일입니다. 엄마는 칭찬을 준비하고, 기대하는 특정한 정답이 있어서는 안 됩니다. 그저 텍스트에 대해 질문을 갖는 것이 대답을 하는 것만큼이나 즐거운 일임을 계속해서 일깨우는 것이 무엇보다 중요합니다.
