Be at Work by Lowering Level of Eyes, But...

Within a year and a half after graduation, some Jo (30) was hired at a medium-sized company that makes machine parts. However, the moment of happiness took no time to disappear and Jo left the job after just four months last summer. Jo wished to work at a public enterprise, but each time he ended up failing to get into one of those positions. The problem occurred when he lowered the level of his eyes (lowered his expectations) to get employed at the factory. The annual salary was much less than he expected, the five work days a week system was unreliable, and the circumstances made it difficult to get along with co-workers. In the end, he handed in his resignation. Currently, he is preparing for a new job.

Employer at a business which operates an Internet study site, Choi (26) recently decided to change her job and applied for online study. A year after her graduation, coming in and out of libraries, she finally got a job by lowering her eyes, but the work did not suit her aptitude and the yearly salary was less than she wanted. After months of thinking seriously about her job, Choi made the decision to change and started to study to attain qualifications to become a certified public insurance accountant. She said, ¡°To get ready for the examination at the end of this year, I am going to leave the job this summer.¡±

With the continuing employment crisis, people lower their eye level to get employed, but most of them are dissatisfied with the job, so they either get ready to shift their working environment or just quit the job.

Last month, the Internet employment site ¡®Job Korea¡¯ conducted a survey targeting 855 domestic enterprises. The results show over 30 percent of recruits give up their job within a year, which means one out of three quits in a year or so. Especially, the ratio of new comers leaving small and medium companies is obviously higher than other company categories.

The site says, ¡°New arrivals go through some difficulties of getting a job and decide to lower their eye level to get hired at a small and medium industry. Cases of those people leaving after less than a year are overflowing. Finally, people who quit a job this way prepare for a second job.¡± Particularly, this is a common situation at businesses in the Busan region.

Officials at the Busan region Bureau of Labor said, ¡°Looking at each young person¡¯s resume, frequency of changing jobs seems to be increasing because those who get employed at one of those small or medium companies are displeased with the working conditions and leave the job. The trend is especially visible in the Busan region where the area¡¯s industries include many of those companies.¡±
