Roh Likely to resign Uri Party in early March

President Roh Moo-hyun could announce as early as tomorrow that he will leave the ruling Uri Party early next month when the special parliamentary session is scheduled to end March 6.

In particular, Roh is likely to announce his resignation during his hiking discussion with Chung Wa Dae correspondents scheduled for February 25 or during his interview with local online newspapers scheduled for February 27.

According to a source from the ruling party, President Roh recently decided to resign from his party because of repeated demands from political sectors. The political parties have urged Roh to give up his membership in the ruling party.

Some analysts said that the main reason Roh decided resign is because he intends to formally propose a constitutional revision to change the nation¡¯s presidential term of office, unveiling that his aim to revise the constitution is totally unrelated with any political intent.

They stated that President Roh would want to keep away from political controversy over his political neutrality for the coming presidential election in December 2007 and to pave the way for the new Uri Party leaders, recently elected, to move to consolidate liberal political forces. The Uri Party has announced that it will step toward forming a new party with reform-centered political forces.

Regarding President Roh¡¯s resignation from the Uri Party, Chung Wa Dae spokesman Yoon Seung-yong said yesterday, ¡°I cannot confirm that now, and nothing is determined.¡±
