US Analysts Pessimistic of North Korean Nuclear Dismantlemen

Despite the six-party talks having adopted a final draft during their fifth round of talks in Beijing, US analysts on North Korea pointed out that Pyongyang will not fully discard its ambitions to develop nuclear arms.

According to the accord, North Korea has to accomplish the first steps toward disarmament within a 60 day-deadline in return for energy assistance. The Chinese government announced the breakthrough after intense negotiations among the six member countries. In American newspapers, US analysts on the North have forecast that Pyongyang will not forsake its conventional principles for national security, namely, the withdrawal of US troops from South Korea and their existing unification strategy.

Gary Samore, Vice President of the Council on Foreign Relations, experienced talks with the North during the Clinton administration. He said, ¡°I don¡¯t think the North¡¯s promise is valuable in that the North and the other countries will negotiate the nuclear dismantlement in a step-by-step approach.¡±

However, he positively said, ¡°I think it is better than nothing. But unfortunately, this agreement has come out after eight bombs were already produced and a nuclear test was conducted by the North.¡± A senate aide also forecast that the North will not negotiate full nuclear dismantlement with the US.

In an interview with CNN, neo-conservative and former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, John Bolton, said, ¡°It is very contradictive to the president¡¯s fundamental policy. I'm hoping that the president has not been fully briefed on it and still has time to reject it,¡± stressing, ¡°It makes the Bush administration look very weak at a time when it needs to look strong in Iraq and dealing with Iran.¡±
