Six-party talks resume in Beijing

Six-party talks, including the two Koreas, the US, China, Japan, and Russia, on dismantling North Korean nuclear programs resumed again today in Beijing. According to a source, officials from the six nations involved in the talks will have laid out their principal statements based on a draft made by host country China.
In particular, it is forecast that the two main countries in the talks, the US and the North, will have face-to-face meetings to negotiate the draft regarding dismantling the North's nuclear facilities and reasonable measures in return.
Analysts say, ¡°It is expected that the US and the North will try to deal with major issues from now on in detail, because both have a draft to be dealt with,¡± adding, ¡°There is a higher likelihood to conclude the nuclear talks with a joint statement because the US and North Korea exchanged their principal positions related to the North¡¯s nuclear dismantlement and the US rewards in return for it at the meeting in December in Berlin.¡±
However, other analysts foresee that, related to the statement to be made, the US and the North will conflict during their bilateral meetings. As host country China expected, no one knows if the six-party talks will conclude within three or four days. The big question is whether the six parties can agree on incentives for Pyongyang in return for its nuclear dismantlement.
According to a source, the draft circulated to each involved country includes ¡°dismantlement of the nuclear program-related facilities within two months¡± and ¡°energy assistance in return.¡±
In addition, it is reported that the circulated draft includes the formation of working-level negotiation groups for each issue. In particular, the North will demand the US to abandon its hostile policy against the North.
