Suicide Truck Bomb Kills More than 102 in Bagdad

A suicide truck bomb exploded yesterday in a large downtown market street in Bagdad killing at least 102 people and injuring over 150. According to a source, this is the seventh suicide truck bomb attack in Iraq. Iraq's government said that an unknown terrorist drove the truck toward the market street and the truck blew up. Immediately, the government officially announced a crack down on militants after the massive bomb killed 102 people in a mainly Shi'ite area of Baghdad.

According to a government source, the attack was the deadliest single bombing since 2003. On November 23 that year, Al Qaeda attacked Bagdad killing at least 215 citizens. The source added that the terrorist camouflaged his bomb truck as if the truck was stacked with fruit and food. Unfortunately, the camouflaged truck could drive into the market where a flood of Bagdad citizens were shopping at that time, and in a few minutes the truck exploded.

Recently, Iraq has sought an effective way of preventing suicide bombings because a series of small bomb attacks and drive-by shootings have caused an increasing death toll of innocent residents in Baghdad. According to the Iraqi government, suicide bombings and shootings killed about one thousand people across the country in the past week. More sorrowful is that it seems to be a never-ending story.

Iraqi police said that the number of the bomb truck victims would increase, saying that it is almost impossible to number the injured and dead. The police added that a total of six suicide truck bombs and suicide bombs occurred yesterday in the northern part of Iraq on a single day.

It killed at least three and injured 21 people. Currently, the Iraqi government is enforcing a night curfew around the area. According to another source, during a heavy exchange of fire between government troops and insurgents in the southeastern part of Bagdad, more than 45 insurgents were killed and six were arrested. The Iraqi government announced a crack down on the rebels, but analysts say that it could be a last-ditch effort and not easy.
