Korean Winter Asian Games Team Places Second
At the Sixth Winter Asian Games held in Changchun in China, the Korean team earned second place with a total of nine gold medals. The team added three gold medals in male skating. The latest gains came from Lee Kyou-huck's feat in the men's 1,000 meter race and the nation's curling team. The Japanese team came in at third place.
The Korean skating team won three gold medals only in short track speed skating. Short track skater Lee Kyou-huck won a gold on the last day, shortening his record by 0.01 second.
Interestingly, both Korean male and female curling teams have won two gold medals in competition with the Japanese team. Korea defeated Japan, 7-6. In addition, the Korean national hockey team beat China, 5-3, winning a bronze medal. However, the Korean female ice hockey team was defeated by North Korea, 0-5.
A day prior to the final day, five Korean female short track skaters raised signs reading "Mount Baekdu is our territory" during the awards ceremony, which annoyed China. China urged Kim Jung-gil not to allow that kind of performance again.
The Asian Winter Games in China officially wrapped up this week, drawing a record number of competitors.
