Nokia Stays on Top of Mobile Handset Market

It is reported that Nokia Corp. maintained its top position in the mobile handset market in 2006, shipping more units than its next two closest competitors combined, Samsung and Motorola. According to the market survey institution, iSuppli Corp., it was estimated that the total number of Nokia cell phone units sold last year was much more than that of the products sold by Samsung and Motorola. The institution said that the top company in the mobile handset market sold over 348 million units last year.

Motorola, in the number two position with 217.4 million units, grew 48.6% percent over 2005. Samsung ended 2006 in the number three position with 117.9 million units, growing 14.6 percent from 102.9 million units in 2005.

The top company also shipped 106 million units in the fourth quarter of 2006, up from 83.7 million during the same period a year earlier. The institution analyzed that Nokia¡¯s highest growth and volume came from European markets. The sales growth of Nokia has continuously increased in Europe. It sold nearly 32 percent of Nokia¡¯s shipments in the fourth quarter last year.

The survey institution said that the biggest waves in the market in 2006 were made by Sony Ericsson. Even though the company currently ranks in the fourth position, it posted the largest growth of all mobile phone makers in the fourth quarter last year, rising 46.4 percent to 74,800 thousand units last year. The fifth largest mobile handset company, LG, only shipped 64,400 thousand units, growing 17.4% last year.
