Chung Wa Dae and GNP Likely to Hold Working-Level Meeting

In regards to the proposal from Kang Jae-sup, the Grand National Party (GNP) chairman, to hold a one-on-one talk with President Roh about the domestic economy, Chung Wa Dae and GNP¡¯s high-ranking statesmen agreed to have a preliminary talk to negotiate the agenda for the two leaders.
In her briefing to reporters, GNP spokeswoman Na Kyung-won said that Bahk Jae-wan, chief secretary of the GNP, called Lee Byung-wan, chief secretary at Chung Wa Dae, at 10:00 a.m. to propose the working-level meeting to negotiate the agenda and that Lee accepted the suggestion. Chung Wa Dae has confirmed the report.
According to a source, the working-level meeting will not be open to the public. The source said that they will discuss the main agenda items to be addressed during the talk, the venue, and the timing. It is forecast that they will negotiate whether to include the matter of constitutional revision, one of the items suggested by President Roh. Roh suggested that the current five-year, single-term presidential system be replaced with a four-year term with possible reelection.
However, the GNP has a negative stance toward including Roh¡¯s constitutional revision as an agenda item. It has suggested including current state affairs such as real estate, education, and domestic economy. Chung Wa Dae has urged the GNP to include a wide range of state affairs including the constitutional revision.
A high-ranking GNP member said, ¡°The GNP would not discuss the constitutional amendment with Chung Wa Dae. If President Roh talks about it during the leaders¡¯ talk, Chairman Kang will strongly resist the idea. However, if Chung Wa Dae sincerely intends to resolve the domestic economy, any talk about that will be welcomed.¡±
