Cold Reaction to New Cash

¡°We sell the high possession of rare new cash.¡±

New 10,000 won and 1,000 won bank notes are beginning circulation in the market. They are the first to be presented in 23 years. Internet auction sites are continuing to sell new bills with the quickest serial numbers and unique numbers. Prices for new currency go from three times face value to a top of 100 times, waiting for people to purchase, but the actual numbers of tenders are few.

At Internet website ¡®Auction¡¯ on January 25, approximately 170 notes of 10,000 won, 1,000, and even a note of 5,000 won that was issued last year, starting with faster issuing numbers or combinations of special numbers are waiting for new owners. In the case of special numbers, there are raiders styles like ¡®0810081¡¯, repeater styles of ¡®0810810¡¯ and ladder styles of ¡®0810810¡¯.

In the morning of January 25, thirty people entered the auction for serial number ¡®0002222¡¯ on a 10,000 won note costing 230,000 won. A 1,000 won note was worth 100,000 won by combining serial numbers from ¡®0020001~0020100¡¯ is recording 516,000 won, which is five times dearer than usual.

However, most offerings are having a hard time finding bidders so sellers who offer the maximum price of some 100 times, dreaming of a ¡®New cash strike,¡¯ are put to shame. The main reasons are the Bank of Korea Museum will hold onto notes with serial numbers from 1 to 100, and 101 to 10000 notes will be kept put at auction by the Korean Minting and Security Printing Corporation. The value of the new currency in the recent market has dropped in order to possess them.

In addition, specially numbered notes like ¡®7777777¡¯ and ¡®1234567¡¯ will be available in the market several years from now, though the Bank of Korea may skip printing those special numbers to stop abnormal attention on collecting money.
