China Establishing Choi Chi Won Memorial Hall

China is promoting a historical research project called the ¡®Dong Book Gong Jeong¡¯ that distorts history. It is now attracting attention by working on a memorial center for Sir Choi Chi Won, a scholar in the Shilla dynasty.

Yangzhou, Jiangsu is also the hometown of former Chinese President Jiang Zemin and the people's government announced, ¡°The Choi Chi Won Memorial Hall will be completed by the end of October with an investment for construction expenses of 3.2 billion won.¡± The announcement was made at the "Cultural and tour exchange agreement ceremony" with the Haeundae district office in the Young Bin Hall on January 19.

The memorial hall planned by Yangzhou city will be constructed as a traditional Chinese building with 1,955 square meters on 10,678 square meters of land. It will be equipped with facilities to commemorate Sir Choi, to exhibit and study his achievements.

The city will first make a facility presenting Choi¡¯s life and will build an exhibition hall to show his representative works, like ¡®Gae woon pal kyoung'. A pavilion will introduce relics, achievements and his return to Shilla when he was a superintendent in the Nation Dang, through models and pictures in subject categories.

The people¡¯s government of Yangzhou plans to establish an investigation center to collect and exhibit theses and data of Korean and Chinese experts and scholars who were connected with Choi.

Mayor Wang Yen Won of the city stated, ¡°The city is in the region where Sir Choi Chi Won worked as royal personnel for four years starting from A.D. 880. We will let the world know about the place by making a manifesto. Cultural exchanges between our countries will be more active once commemorative facilities are established that remind people of the friendly agent between Korea and China, Choi¡¯s ideas and activities.¡±

Chairman Bae Duk Gwang of the Haeundae district office promises, ¡°The regional name of Haeundae district takes after the name of Sir Choi. The district and Choi have a deep relationship and Yangzhou also has had connections with Haeundae for a long time. Some Choi family members in the Busan region contributed their help to donate a statue of Choi in the memorial center.¡±

Prior to the announcement, the Haeundae district office agreed to set up a sisterhood relationship agreement for improving commerce and cultural exchanges with the Chinese city on January 18.
