Now Ski Dome at Mt. Geom Jeong?
Along with Mountain Hwang-ryeong, secret work is in progress on Mountain Geom Jeong to construct a ski dome (indoor ski slope) that is causing criticism about environmental damage.
According to local people in Geom seong Dong in Geom jeong district on January 18, a G company, which has its main office in Seoul, is promoting a ski dome business with a length of 250 meters on 180,000 pyeong in Geom seong Dong. The site is partially included in the protected area for cultural assets near adjoining land of residents in the One and Two Dong divisions.
The company explained the business contents to the people through a presentation meeting last November and suggested conditions for a fifty year lease of the land.
The majority of residents agreed with the conditions during an internal conference, but the current business procedure is temporarily on hold because some disagreed, citing the trustworthiness of the business. Opponents wonder whether the mountain improvement plan will be approved or not and are dubious, with no idea of the business at all.
Referring to the matter, persons in the area said, “Businessmen gathered around the place for development for so long, but the area could not be improved due to various restrictions and environmental damage. Some residents have an opposing opinion because of side effects from a sudden contract, such as if the working plan collapses or damages occur in some areas under cultural protection.”
Residents will check the procedure of the ski dome work, which is promoted in Seoul by the company, and will hold another discussion through a residential meeting in early March.
The persons at the G business stated, “This company still has not made any contact with Busan City and has not received any agreement yet, so this is not the time to present the business plan in detail. We suggested a fifty year lease contract, but the work has to go through extra thinking while we check the reactions of residents.”
With the current situation, Chairman of Maintenance Patrol of Mt. Geom jeong Heo Tak said, “It seems like the company shows some possibility of polluting the mountain that is famous for having representative trees with the improvement plan. To stop development that is thoughtless for the environment, Busan Metropolitan City should not approve the registration.”
A city official stated, “The city has no idea about the business yet. Once the suggestion is official, then officers will examine it thoroughly.”
The target area, mountain 5/5 in Geom seong Dong, is designated as an amusement facility sorted by the city planning offices.
