First Positive Flu Patient in Busan This Winter

The first positive influenza patient appeared in the Busan region this winter and a rapid spread of influenza has become a hot issue.

The Busan Metropolitan City Institute of Health and Environment announced on January 17 that they found seven influenza viruses in 71 positive influenza cases, examining flu patients at each hospital in the city during the last two weeks.

The confirmed virus is a type A (H3N2) which is recently prevalent on the peninsula. The virus has spread to six patients aged five to twelve years old and one person in their sixties.

Since the first case in Chang won, Kyung nam province on January 1, 157 cases of the virus have been reported in the nation up until now, but this is the first one to be reported in the Busan region. Vaccine against the disease is secured in each district and county, but Busan almost ran out so prevention of spreading the disease is a great concern.

During weekly inspections of influenza samples conducted by the Korean Center for Disease Control and Prevention throughout the country, there were only 3.9 patients out of 1000 outpatients from December 10 to December 16. Now it is up to 8.7 people who claim to be infected with influenza in the first week of this month.
