[Editorial] Crossbow Terrorizes Constitutionalism

The incident of a crossbow attack on a high court chief judge, while serving on the court, is such a shock. It has rocked our social constitution to its heels. It implies problematic factors in our society from various angles and is expected to arouse concern.
The essence of this incident is that the person concerned was discontented with a verdict and terrorized the judge. It is not too much to describe the situation as an epoch-making event when the authority of the judicial system is terrorized. Public attention is engaged by the fact that the victim is a High Court chief judge of the vice-minister class and the suspect is a professor, who is a man of influence with several articles published in international professional journals. The reality that a professor, known as a supreme intellectual, fell to the status of a terror suspect shows that our society carries a lot of problems.
The suspect revealed that he chose the very last option after a legitimate measure was rejected. Nevertheless, violence cannot and should not be justified for any reason. It deserves a judgment of the law. His statement that he did what he did to show the corruption of the judiciary indicates many things. No matter whether it is true or not, the recognition that there is a law for the rich and another for the poor still lives in the nation.
The recent instance of a Seoul High Court chief judge who received money and other articles, and was also treated by brokers, has discredited the judicature. This is another reason not to view this incident as a simple one-time occurrence.
This incident has aroused attention towards the tendency that society still relies on illegitimate acts and violence. A characteristic of a court judgment is that no matter how fair it is, one party concerned will be discontented. However, it is not acceptable that the discontent is expressed in violence. At the same time, the judicature should be reminded that the retrieval of the nation¡¯s trust is an urgent homework of the time.
