Ten Fewer Questions in College Entrance Exam Shortened by
10 Minutes

The current sixty questions in the language sections will be reduced to fifty in this year¡¯s university entrance examination and the examination time will be shortened to eighty minutes.

The Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development announced on January 15 that it will present for administrative preview a revised examination bill for the standard plan for the 2003 college entrance test with a decreased number of questions in the language sectors, from January 16 to February 5.

According to the revised test bill, the current ninety minute language portion with sixty questions is going to be reduced to fifty questions in eighty minutes, shortening the time by ten minutes.

The Ministry of Education will evenly cut questions from each part including listening, writing and reading. It will attempt to maintain a similar test ratio.

This revised bill is set by the Korean Institute of Curriculum and Evaluation (KICE) to reduce student responsibility on the exam. The education ministry follows the opinion to cut the number of questions.

In the case of the language part in the first session, sixty questions should be completed within ninety minutes. Students have a heavy burden due to the long exam time and with introducing a ninth-level system from the year 2008, points were made where it is not necessary to keep additional questions.

Accordingly, the Ministry of Education announced the improvement plan of the examination, reducing the number of questions and exam time limit, after receiving agreement through a public hearing sponsored by KICE. It then decided to preview the revised plan.

The ministry will take positive and negative opinions and reasons on each category of the predicted contents and will investigate the opinions thoroughly. The revision will confirmed and will be announced sometime next month.
