UN Accepts Korean Forces for Lebanon

The United Nations officially accepted a plan to dispatch Korean troops for the UN Interim Forces in Lebanon, on January 15. Dispatch will be processed around March.
It has been decided to send approximately 350 soldiers to the area around Tyre in the southern part of the country.
The well-informed sources in the government stated on January 15, ¡°The government recently received the UN¡¯s mind on official acceptance to dispatch Korean soldiers to Lebanon. The number of troops will reach up to 350.¡±
The sources said, ¡°It is in the middle of negotiating the region for the dispatch, but it may be the southwestern Lebanese area.¡± Moreover, another government official sent a statement that it is almost confirmed that the Tyre region in southwestern Lebanon will be the area and public security is in good condition.
The government already investigated the local circumstances by sending a group for practical affairs composed of representatives from the Ministry of National Defense, National Intelligence Service, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, from January 1 to January 5. Once an army post is set, the first stage will be sending an advance force to Lebanon led by the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Written conditions containing various details of expenses, location and size will be agreed on by Korea and the UN.
