Bush Announces New Policy

US president George W Bush held a TV press conference at the White House at 11 am (Korean time) on January 11. He announced a new Iraq policy focusing on ten billion dollars to support restoration of Iraq¡¯s economy and an additional 21,500 troops to be sent to the country.
Bush officially acknowledged his mistakes in opposing Iraq strategies for some time, including the point when he did not put more US and Iraqi troops into battle against opposition forces and asked for support of the new policy.
Among the additional soldiers being dispatched to Iraq, 17,500 will be located in Baghdad, 4,000 will go to Sunni areas and the southern Anbarr region, where a base for Al-Qaeda is located, to secure the Baghdad neighborhood.
Prior to the announcement, Korean President Roh Moo Hyun had a phone conversation with President Bush for ten minutes starting from 9:30 pm on January 10. Roh heard preliminary explanations about the new ideas of Iraq policy from Bush. Roh said, ¡°I fully understand the background of new comprehensive policy made by the United States and I support President Bush¡¯s will to settle and restore Iraq.¡±
The two leaders sympathized over the necessities of advancing solvable procedures for North Korea¡¯s nuclear problem in diplomatic and peaceful ways and plan to tie-up with the matter.
