Indonesian Passenger Jet Missing

An Indonesian passenger jet carrying about 100 passengers went missing yesterday. At a news briefing, the chairman of Adam Air stated that the passenger jet K1-574 had taken off from a stopover in Surabaya on Java Island and was scheduled to land on Manado Island, two hours away by plane.

An Indonesian radio station reported that the flight was carrying a total of 102 people including crew members. ¡°The last contact with the ground on Monday was about an hour and seven minutes after it took off from Surabaya,¡± said Tatang, senior official at the transport ministry.

Air traffic controller Bhabr told Indonesian Metro TV, ¡°The flight was flying in very bad weather,¡± adding, ¡°It is believed that the flight had an emergency because it is five hours overdue at its destination.¡±

The Indonesian transportation minister stated that Indonesia is focusing on searching for the missing carrier. Adam Air is a privately owned, low-cost airline for domestic routes that began operations several years ago. One of its jetliners lost all communications and a navigation system for four hours during a flight last year, and it was forced to make an emergency landing.
