Indonesian Passenger Jet Missing
An Indonesian passenger jet carrying about 100 passengers went missing yesterday. At a news briefing, the chairman of Adam Air stated that the passenger jet K1-574 had taken off from a stopover in Surabaya on Java Island and was scheduled to land on Manado Island, two hours away by plane.
An Indonesian radio station reported that the flight was carrying a total of 102 people including crew members. “The last contact with the ground on Monday was about an hour and seven minutes after it took off from Surabaya,” said Tatang, senior official at the transport ministry.
Air traffic controller Bhabr told Indonesian Metro TV, “The flight was flying in very bad weather,” adding, “It is believed that the flight had an emergency because it is five hours overdue at its destination.”
The Indonesian transportation minister stated that Indonesia is focusing on searching for the missing carrier. Adam Air is a privately owned, low-cost airline for domestic routes that began operations several years ago. One of its jetliners lost all communications and a navigation system for four hours during a flight last year, and it was forced to make an emergency landing.
