Products from Cloned Livestock to be Introduced in the Marke

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said yesterday that meat and milk from cloned animals such as cattle, pigs, and goats are safe to eat and drink. According to experts, if the FDA grants final approval, it plans to permit the sale of meat and milk from cloned livestock. However, even if the products are permitted to be sold, no one knows the response from consumers.

The FDA said, ¡°We have not found any dangerous factors from the products.¡± But it will maintain its current moratorium on sales until final results come out. However, it excludes sheep from the safe food lists, saying that it does not yet have sufficient information to evaluate whether sheep are safe to eat or not.

In particular, the FDA added that it will not recommend cloned food manufacturers to attach a special label on the food, saying that the matter will be determined after its experiments on the food is concluded. Currently, a few companies in America are cloning animals and they have cloned 150 cattle. The producers have been waiting for FDA¡¯s final permission to sell the meat, asserting that it is very safe to eat and superior in quality.

Advocates for cloned food have claimed that consumers can buy more tender meat and more milk by cloning high disease-resistant livestock. However, some consumers and religious groups have opposed permitting cloned food in the market, claiming that researchers have not produced clear experimental results about how animal cloning affects nutrition and biology.

Analysts point out that even if the FDA permits cloned food to be sold and proves that it is safe to eat, there still exists consumers¡¯ resistance to the food.
