Samsung Electronics Develops World's First 1-Gb Mobile DRAM

Samsung Electronics Co. has unveiled the world¡¯s first one-gigabit mobile Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) chip. It made the announcement yesterday, followed by PC DRAM. The company added that the chipset is applied by the world¡¯s first 80 nano technology. It developed 256 Mb in 2004 and 512 Mb in 2005.
Compared to the existing 512 Mb DRAM, this new memory chip is much slimmer and is known as a low power chip. According the company¡¯s source, this chip has a temperature-sensing function to reduce power drain by 30 percent by maximizing a ¡®refresh cycle¡¯ for keeping data.
The company explained that even if it is being used to read and write data, the DRAM consumes less power than existing high-density chips. This one-gigabit mobile DRAM can be centered in electrical appliances.
Since it is expected that there will be more high-capacity electronic products, Samsung will begin to develop two-gigabit DRAM chips from next year, on the basis of this foundation. The company also plans to mass produce the new chip from the second quarter of next year, expecting the one-gigabit DRAM will dominate the mobile DRAM market by more than 50 percent. Currently, Samsung is commanding 50 percent of the world market.
