Welcome for Incoming UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon

Korea enthusiastically welcomed incoming UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to Seoul., He returned to Seoul on December 24 to attend a variety of welcoming events prior to his official inauguration on January 1, 2007. As a token of saving his face, the National Assembly yesterday passed a budget bill for international organizations with more generous amounts than the original budget bill that was submitted to the Assembly.

On Christmas Day, he had meal time with his relatives and family. On the following day, he attended an event at the 63 Building hosted by the Journalist Federation of Korea to receive the ¡°Most Proud South Korean Award.¡± Following the event, Ban visited the Foreign Ministry where he had worked. The ministry welcomed his return as the UN Secretary General.

After having a luncheon with his ex-subordinates, Ban unveiled a 1.5 meter congratulatory copperplate with the UN emblem in the center surrounded by the national flags of the 192 UN member states.

At his news conference, he mentioned the six-party talks, saying, ¡°It is important to continue patience and keep on mounting mutual trust,¡± adding, ¡°As UN Secretary General, I am willing to take on a bridging role in resolving the issues, if there are supplementary works that I can support.¡±

Ban wraps up his five-day stay in Korea after meeting Lim Chae-jung, Speaker of the 17th National Assembly.
