[Editorial] More Solid Management Needed for BEXCO

The closing accounts of BEXCO throughout 2006 have been released. It is assumed that the net income is 385 million and it has kept the balance in the black for four consecutive years. The current net income is the largest since the opening in May 2001 and the working ratio of facilities is 61%, which is also the highest. However, when it comes down to the bottom it is similar to an empty vessel because the parking income played a big role in accomplishing the balance in the black of BEXCO. The parking income outstrips operating profits and net income. Moreover, not a single exhibition that was held in BEXCO was authenticated by Union Des Foires Internationales (UFI). The actual results of the management of BEXCO are almost too hard to believe.

BEXCO was an advance base of the convention industry when it opened and was likened to a golden egg that would lead Busan to become an international conference city. It was anticipated that it would cause economic ripple effects for the convention industry. However, the outcome of the management at the sixth anniversary is far from the goal at the start.

It is evaluated that BEXCO is established as the ¡®convention specialty¡¯ after being a main stage for the Busan APEC summit meetings. The chances and potential energy of the convention industry are verified to be a core strategic industry of Busan. Nevertheless, it was criticized for being too commercial with various unfruitful events that were hosted at random from the beginning. Eventually, it was humiliated by hosting no authenticated conventions by UFI. Questions should be asked about what Busan City and BEXCO have been doing since APEC.

The future of BEXCO is obvious if the current situation continues. Competition in the convention industry at home and abroad is fierce. Besides the overseas competitors, domestic centers are flooding in with a boom in the convention industry across the country. On top of the reality that over 80% of international events are held in Seoul, Goyang City in Kyounggi-do has opened KINTEX, which is larger than BEXCO. The national capital region is attracting the convention industry. Hence, it is noticeable that BEXCO is on the edge. BEXCO should strengthen its competitiveness through reforming its management as soon as possible. It should not be satisfied simply with the surplus from the parking income.
