Bush considering more troops for Iraq

Regarding the Iraq war, US President George W. Bush said, ¡°We are not winning as quickly in Iraq as I wanted,¡± adding, ¡°So, I am reviewing all options in Iraq, including dispatching more US troops for Iraq.¡± He took a negative stance toward dispatching more troops for Iraq, but after Republican defeats in mid-term elections last month he faced increased pressure to revamp his Iraq policy.

In a year-end news conference at the White House yesterday, Bush stated that he is leaning toward increasing the permanent size of the Army and Marine Corps against Islamic terrorists, saying, ¡°I talked to Secretary of Defense Robert Gates to bring me a recommendation about how to proceed forward on this idea.¡±

Democrats strongly criticized his statement, saying, ¡°He doesn¡¯t understand yet why he has to convert his Iraq strategy.¡± But Bush stressed, ¡°I didn¡¯t decide yet, but I'm reviewing all possible options including additional troops for Iraq.¡±

Regarding his concession yesterday that the US is not winning in Iraq, he explained, ¡°I meant that the US is not succeeding as quickly as we are doing in Iraq.¡± Asked about the recommendation from the Iraq Study Group, Bush said, ¡°I continue to believe that victory in Iraq is achievable, and I want to follow the road to victory.¡±

Incoming US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, criticized President Bush, saying, ¡°We are very pessimistic that Bush will change the disastrous situation in Iraq, it needs to be reversed.¡±
