Six-Party talks extended until Dec. 22

South Korea¡¯s nuclear envoy to the six-party talks, Chun Yung Woo, said yesterday that members to the six-party talks on the North Korean nuclear program have decided to extend negotiations until Friday.

At a briefing after the third session Chun said, ¡°We intended to close these talks as scheduled, but many different gaps among the members still need to be narrowed, and the six countries are still engaged in serious discussions. That is why we agreed to go until this Friday.¡±

Cautioning that extending discussions for two more days does not necessarily mean there will be a dramatic agreement that can be reached. He explained that the six countries now understood the major discrepancies among the countries and what each other¡¯s priorities were.

Chun added that as the six countries have entered a substantial negotiation stage, they agreed a two-day extension was needed, rather than calling a recess as scheduled. He stressed, ¡°As we resumed these talks after a long hibernation, frankly it is hard to be optimistic about these talks.¡±
