WP-ABC News Poll, ¡°Hot competition between Hillary and Giuli

The Washington Post reported that New York Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (D) and former New York Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani (R) hold early leads over potential rivals for their parties' 2008 presidential nominations. The poll was conducted December 7-11 by telephone with a random national sample of 1,005 American adults.
According to results of the poll, Hillary leads the field with 39 percent, followed by Obama at 17 percent, Edwards at 12 percent, and former vice president Al Gore at 10 percent among Democrats. One of the interesting results is that Obama, a black senator, came in second. Hillary has a clear head start over other prospective Democratic candidates, with Sen. Obama, who only a month ago expressed interest in the 2008 race.
Among Republicans, Giuliani is favored by 34 percent to McCain's 26 percent. Gingrich is at 12 percent, and outgoing Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney runs fourth at 5 percent. Analysts say that Giuliani won public popularity since September 11, 2001, by showing his leadership at the time of the disaster.
When asked to rate potential candidates from both parties, American respondents replied that Giuliani topped the list with a 67 percent favorable rating and Hilary followed at 56 percent.
