Citizens to Select Busan Superintendent from Next Year

Citizens of Busan will elect the Busan Metropolitan Superintendent of Educational Affairs in February next year.

The National Assembly held a general meeting in the afternoon of December 7 where the citizens of Busan directly chose a superintendent and members of the educational board. The conference was completed by passing a ‘Legal revised bill in connection with self-government of regional education’ that unifies school boards within the metropolitan and provincial assemblies upon the permanent position. The revised bill will be put in force starting from January 1 next year.

The election of the Busan metropolitan city superintendent is tentatively set for February 14 next year when the current superintendent’s term of office ends on February 28. The resignation period for government officials planning on becoming candidates is sixty days prior to the election. The date may be before or after December 16. The current superintendent can keep his present position, but the officer has to wait for an authoritative interpretation on resignation facts by educational members in proportion to the local assembly.

Expenses from the direct election system are estimated at approximately sixteen billion won and will be paid by the regional self-governing association.

The Kyung-nam provincial superintendent, who completes his term in office in December next year, will be selected by direct election in the second half of next year. In the case of Ulsan, where the present superintendent is standing trial for a rigged election, the direct election by the citizens to select the future superintendent will be effective immediately after confirming a judgment of being guilty.

Other superintendents will be elected along with civic and provincial governors at the regional election which is schedule to be held in May, 2010.
