Gates Hearing as Nominee for US Secretary of Defense

Robert Gates, nominee for US Secretary of Defense, conceded at his confirmation hearing today that the US is not a winner in Iraq. It is reported that he is expected to win easy approval by Congress. He also stated that he strongly opposes conducting wars against Iran and Syria.
When Gates was asked by Democratic Senator Carl Levin whether the US was a winner in Iraq, he replied ¡°No, sir.¡± According to a source, the Senate Armed Services Committee will recommend unanimously that Gates be confirmed as the next Secretary of Defense.
In particular, Gates warned that the Middle East could explode into violence if the matter of Iraq is not solved within one or two years, reiterating that the US should take appropriate measures for stabilizing the Iraqi government.
He added that President Bush wants him to review the Iraq issues and to double check all possible alternatives. At his confirmation hearing, he also stressed that President Bush will determine all approaches on Iraq.
President Bush urged the Senate to move swiftly, saying, ¡°I believe that he can fulfill the position as a successor of Rumsfeld.¡± Bush nominated him to replace Donald Rumsfeld right after the Republican Party was defeated in mid-term elections last month.
