Soaring Cabbage Prices Reach 1,400 won

Cabbage prices are skyrocketing as the kimchi-making season begins. A couple of weeks ago, Chinese cabbage sold at 650 won each. However, as cabbage consumption and demand increases, the prices also rise, reaching 1,400 won each.

Last month, Mega-mart hosted a special event selling cabbages at 650 won. Yet, as demand increasingly goes up, cabbage prices are incredibly soaring. A source said that a cabbage currently sells for 1,400 won at retailers.

A staff member from Hanaro Club said, ¡°We are selling a three-cabbage unit at 3,900 won. Vegetable buyer Chung Jong Young explained, ¡°Even in wholesale markets, cabbage is now selling between 1,200 won and 1,300 won.¡±

Two weeks ago, Homeplus hosted a special cabbage event, selling them at 580 won each, but it raised prices to over 1,000 won last week. A source from Homeplus says that it will mark down cabbage prices to 990 won until Dec. 6. It is reported that E-mart is also currently selling cabbage at 980 won as long as its 13th Anniversary event goes on.
