Growing Feud Between President Roh and Uri Party

Fierce conflict worsens between President Roh and Uri Party Chairman Kim Geun Tae. Kim announced that the party will conduct a survey to decide its future direction although Roh opposed the idea, saying, ¡°Only a few senior lawmakers, presidential candidates, and lawmakers of the party cannot determine the Uri Party¡¯s fate.¡± Roh suggested that, regarding the issue of its political realignment, the party¡¯s future should be decided through its convention.

President Roh, currently visiting Indonesia, posted a letter on the Chung Wa Dae website yesterday entitled, ¡®It is necessary for all of us to take a responsible attitude¡¯. He said in the letter to the ruling Uri Party that the future direction and fate should be discussed through the national party convention, stressing that the future direction is not a matter that can be decided by only some senior leaders, presidential candidates, and lawmakers.

President Roh also stressed, ¡°All procedures should be conducted in compliance with the party constitution. They should be democratic, traditional, and legitimate. It is a basic principle of democracy,¡± continuing, ¡°As a party member, I want to discuss the party¡¯s future with the leaders and party members.¡±

In the middle of the growing feud between President Roh and the party leaders, Roh supporters within the party heavily criticized the leaders and their plan to conduct a survey on the party¡¯s future through a questionnaire. One of the president's supporters, Kim Hyuk Kyu, criticized his party leaders, saying, ¡°It is nonsense to survey the party and plan its future direction through a questionnaire with multiple choices.¡±

Despite President Roh¡¯s strong opposition, the party leaders decided that they will conduct the survey as scheduled, saying, ¡°There is no time to hesitate to discuss our future with our party members.¡±
