Busan Board of Education with Written Resolutions
Be ready to undertake resignation of the minister

The Busan Board of Education has demanded a retraction of the law regarding local self-government of education that was passed by the National Assembly Standing Committee last month, insisting the law is a change for the worse. The board intends to launch an election campaign against the lawmakers who proposed the law if it is not retracted. Moreover, they plan to pursue the resignation of the Minister of Education and Human Resources Development.

The board asserted, through written resolutions at a temporary meeting, that the National Board of Education ignored an ardent appeal from educational circles and passed the law on local self-government of education. The law will combine city and state boards of education into city and state assembly standing committees. It also mentioned that such a law can efface political neutrality, independence and professionalism of education that is secured by the constitution.

The city and state boards of education have added that a board of education should become an independent legislative organization to realize the self-government of education that is true to the name. They also warned against the ignorance and narrow view of the government and the board of education who are attempting to subjugate the board to the local assembly.

The city and state boards of education requested withdrawal of the unification legislation on local self-government of education and general self-government, as well as an apology by the Minister of Education and the Chairperson of the National Assembly Standing Committee of Education on the amendment of the local self-government of education law.

Furthermore, they demanded changing the law to allow the board of education to become an independent legislative organization.
