President Roh Considers Cultivating Local Companies

It is reported that President Roh is likely to consider cultivating special measures for balancing local development and facilitating local economies. During a Foreign Investment Festival hosted by the Ministry of Commerce and the Korean Trade-Investment Promotion Agency, he addressed the investors, ¡°In conjunction with balanced local development, there are more influential measures needed for balancing local developments and we are currently researching necessary policies for it,¡± adding, ¡°I have heard from many company owners in the provinces that more progressive policies are needed for local development.¡±

President Roh, at a luncheon with members of the third Presidential Committee on Balanced National Development, stated, ¡°It is high time to review whether new policies are needed for balanced national development, as in analyzing and evaluating government policies.¡±

He asked the members to review previous policies, whether they are effective or not. He stressed, ¡°Local governments¡¯ autonomous endeavors to innovate themselves are key for balanced national development,¡± adding, ¡°The central government only has to play a role in consulting and supporting their innovative endeavors.¡±

He said finally, ¡°This is the only way to block Seoul-oriented development, to resolve its overpopulation and the lack of housing in Seoul. It can be accomplished through solid policies for balanced national development.¡±

It is expected that the central government is likely to support local companies by offering tax cuts and mitigating regulations for activating local businesses.
