[Editorial] 60 Year Old Dong-A University Leaps into
Prestige Private Education

Dong-A University was established in 1946 as the first private learning institution in the Yeongnam area and is greeting its 60th anniversary on November 1. The university was established after the liberation in order to nurture the talent of the independent fatherland. It has expanded from only two departments and five subjects, including law and liberal arts and sciences, to become a large university with four campuses, 11 colleges, 10 graduate schools and 58 major departments. Almost 15,000 scholars have graduated from the university that now has 2,000 personnel. Since the medical college was established in 1990 the university has stretched itself to become a traditional prestige private school that is true to the name.
It should be highly regarded because many graduates have played pivotal roles in the political, legal, trade, industry and sporting fields despite the tough conditions for a local university. Dong-A University has set a good example of managing a private university as they were awarded the ¡®Excellent University Award¡¯ last year. The award was hosted by the National Private University Professors Union for obtaining excellent outcomes in the fields of study results, specialization and academic-industrial cooperation.
Nevertheless, the future of the university is by no means smooth. Far more tireless effort, patience and change will be needed than over the past 60 years. In recent times, universities inside and outside the country are rapidly attempting self-change in order to go with the flow. Universities that cannot adapt to the changing trends are nothing other than outcasts. Dong-A University is no exception.
For Dong-A to achieve its goal of becoming a top ten domestic university, the most important matters are securing excellent professors and investing in equipment for an education environment. Financial resources are the key to distinguish the speed of growth of the university. In particular, establishing a law school and changing the medical school are the rudders to distinguish the next generation of development. Matters as important as these are the moral rearmament of the constituent members of the university including the professors and school personnel.
Dong-A University is expected to be responsible for its mission as a prestigious private school that makes a contribution to the local community, as well as to the country, with all the efforts from professors, school personnel and, of course, students.
