Feud Over Establishing a New Party

As voices grow among ruling Uri party policymakers to establish a new party, former Justice Minister Chun Jung Bae proposed that it is necessary for the party to discuss the matter. On the other hand, opponents to the idea are urging them to halt discussions. However, it seems to be seriously considered among party members.

Bae triggered the issue by proposing that it is high time that they discuss the issue of establishing a new party. At a press conference, he mentioned that the party should establish a special team for the purpose.

His official proposal played a major role in the feud over the issue, after by-election defeats last week. He was a major player in the establishment of the Uri party after President Roh was elected in 2002.

Over the weekend, members held a four-hour table talk. The implication is that establishing a new party is unavoidable since Uri has been defeated by opposition parties in all by-elections until now.

Some experts say that the proposal may be a sign of a political realignment. It is reported that during the discussion, they talked about three possible courses of action. However, this course is facing strong opposition from pro-Roh groups.
