Additional Sanctions on North Korea, Rice Says

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said that, through the same approach that was applied to Indian and Pakistani nuclear tests, the US will impose more sanctions on North Korea. She added that even though Pyongyang returns to the six-party talks, US and Asian countries, including Russia, have already agreed to hold to the UN sanctions until there appears to be a significant indication of North Korean denuclearization.
Rice mentioned the first international conference for preventing nuclear terrorism in Morocco on October 30. A source said that a major issue will be preventing the transfer of nuclear weapons and materials from North Korea to other terrorist groups and nations.
She stressed that they know South Korea¡¯s complicated situation, with South and North Korea existing on the same peninsula. Seoul has to continue reunification events for separated families and it also has to embrace North Korea. But they cannot let North Korea explore nuclear devices in the backyard of South Korea.
She recalled that US President George W. Bush said he does not intend to invade North Korea, saying, ¡°The international community has to be aware that the assertion by North Korea has been that US policy toward North Korea is hostile plans to refuse constructive choices by itself.¡±
She said, ¡°Iran has been taking a look at international response after North Korea¡¯s nuclear test,¡± urging, ¡°The UN Security Council sanctions should call on Iran for its challenge to the international community and ask for appropriate responsibility to the nation.¡±
